Hi, I`m living in Norway and bought a Quarter mare from Denmark, after a few weeks she was ill and now 4 months later our vet. has diagnosed her with COPD( very few casus here in Norway). She responds very good to Ventopulmin and changes made in her environment(Made after reading the articles on this site).
But to the main point.... she is pregnant for a foal in April, how about the medication and the sideeffects and how about still breeding her?
It`s a very good mare, 8 years old and have competed successfully in reining , but the cold climate in Norway seems to bring forward the COPD.
I`m looking forward hearing from you and others with experience with this!
Elizabeth.

Hello Elizabeth,
As long as you can manage this problem completely by environment there is no reason not to breed. Corticosteroids are generally considered contraindicated during all stages of pregnancy and should only be used in emergency situations.

Ventopulmin (clenbuterol) is contraindicated the last month of pregnancy and the information I have says that its safety in brood mares otherwise has not been established. For the latest on this check your drug insert.
