Discussion on Fly Mask to Protect Ulcer? | |
Author | Message |
Posted on Tuesday, Nov 13, 2001 - 9:21 am: My mare ulcerated her eye yesterday. We had the vet come out and he prescribed some topical. I believe my mare got something in her eye in the trailer. I was wondering if anyone uses fly masks when trailering to keep debris out of eyes, and if anyone with a horse with an eye injury has used a fly mask to protect the eye. |

My horses are in sand paddocks part of the day and they wear masks all the time to protect them from the sun and the blowing sand. Their eyes stay great with them. |

It seems to have healed very quickly. I am still going to use up the medicine, and keep the mask on until the medicine is gone. also, the vet is coming again next week to certify her healed or not. Question, though. I don't understand why the pupil dilating and contracting would stop the healing process. Does the pupil moving cause the surface of the eye to move? Also, why not exercise them? Does the pressure in the eye increase with exercise, which causes pressure on the surface? Just curious.(I think this is a Dr. O question) Alicia |

Posted on Friday, Nov 16, 2001 - 4:50 pm: Dr. O,Actually, not all my questions were answered in that article. I now understand why we don't want the pupil to change (because it is painful and to keep some kind of fibrogen thing from forming), but I still don't understand what is wrong with exercise, unless the obvious point of not putting them in bright places is the reason. Posted on Thursday, Nov 22, 2001 - 12:19 am: Alicia,I know this is a little after the fact, but I sewed a patch from a black t-shirt on the inside of my horses fly mask. It absorbs the extra ointment from his eye and is very easy to clean. Paula |

By the way, I noticed I hadn't closed up this discussion. The vet checked her again last Monday, and she was deemed healed. I have been riding her now for a week, and, besides having lost some condition, she is doing great. Thanks for all the help, everyone! |
