Posted on Saturday, Nov 17, 2001 - 10:14 pm: Two weeks ago, I purchased a 15 yr. old paint mare who has been in the same pasture/barn with my other mare for over 7 yrs.so I know her history and she's always been a sound girl. The week before I bought her,she suddenly had a very swollen upper right eye area and accompanying tearing and redness. Since whe was in heat, we assumed she was kicked by one of the geldings, or ran into something during a chase. Her then (very conscientious) owner called the vet who came and said that there had been a trauma to the eye,and prescribed atropene and banamine. The swelling left, but the tearing, redness and soreness certainly didn't. Since I bought her, I've been using several treatments prescribed by the vet, who has been there 5 times. The last visit, the vet expressed concern about a very red oval area to the back of the horse's eye and was worried about a carcinoma. I see some improvement--the cloudiness is reduced(but not gone), the tearing is somewhat reduced and she is keeping her eye open much more. However the sclera is still quite red,and the odd flat red oval shape is still there.I can't tell if her pupil is dilated or not. The vet now wants me to consult an equine opthalmologist who is VERY EXPENSIVE. I've spent a fortune in the past 2 weeks. I do have an appointment sceduled Monday with another vet whom I've used in the past for a second opinion. Am I being impatient? Should the eye be healing faster? I wrestle 4 kinds of medication into her twice a day. I've read the articles in Advisor on this topic. They are really scary--and don't mention the odd clearish red oval that's concerning me most. I'd really appreciate some advice. thanks, Patty |

Not being able to examine the red oval I do not know what that could be either but if you read the article on SCC you will see that it could fit your description: Both irritated tumnors and ulcers could appear as flat red ovals.DrO |
