Discussion on Swelling of hock | |

Posted on Monday, Jan 14, 2002 - 1:20 pm: Hi.I have been reading several discussions on care of swelling of hocks..I have a 5 y.o. quarter gelding who injured his hock. His xrays show no fracture and he is not obviously lame. The hock had gotten to the size of a large orange..we had it aspirated and injected then wrapped for several days. But one day out of the wrap, the swelling was just as bad as before. I finally was able to get a hold of some neoprene hock boots. My question now is, if I have his hock aspirated and injected once more, then get the boot on and leave it on, will this prevent the reoccurence of swelling? If so, how long a time period would be indicated. Also, why do they make so much "juice" in the first place? Has anyone had any success with any sort of treatment for this problem? Thanks Diana |

Then she injected it with 18 mg of triamcinolone. The joint doesn't show any swelling either by xray or exam. When I checked it last night it was slightly decreased and felt boggier, like a water balloon. I have kept the neoprene hock boot on thinking that if I take leave it off it'll just get bigger. Information that I have found seems to indicate that this will never go back to normal. In your experience, is this true?Thank you for your time. Diana |
