Discussion on Soft Palate, abnormal or not?
Author Message

I have recently been given a 7 yo OTT gelding who is quite fussy with his mouth. He has been floated and had no real problems. While I was checking his palate to see what kind of bit to try I noticed that his palate is incredibly soft, not at all like the hard palate of my other horses. Could this in some way be causing his fussiness and how common is this softness?

I am not sure who has the problem. Usually the hard palate has a soft and cushy outer layer throughout its length with a firm base. It does get a little stiffer where the ridges start but still feels soft to me. If there are no sores or reddness I would not worry in uncertain have your vet take a look.
