Mary, I just saw your post. I have a Shire mare that somehow tore her collateral and cruciate ligaments in her rear left stifle several years ago. I know how you feel and I am hoping you read this because I am here to tell you that she has recovered (from that, at least). Stall rest and bute were prescribed for her and didn't work. The bute made her crazy and she just decided to break out of the stall (she weighed about 1800 lbs. then) and run around the neighborhood with her son. This, of course, made her injury worse. For a year, she limped around and I was going nuts. Then I asked my vet if there was anything that I might give her for some pain relief and he said to try MSM. At the time, there was very little known about its effects.

I decided after consulting two other vets to breed her to a small TB stallion. I had started her on a double dose of MSM two weeks prior to sending her to the breeding farm. After a month, she came home, and to my amazement was walking around much, much better. I have kept her on it since and until she foundered last year due to having a dead foal, she was only a very slight bit off and was trotting and cantering around with no problem. I had also been riding her occasionally. Now, I am a scientist and don't readily believe anything I hear without proof but after this experience I am an avid supporter of MSM use.

Hope your horse is better.

From what we know about MSM Diane your experience was one of the horse got well in spite of the this treatment not because of it.

I know this discussion is ancient so I am not sure why this is showing up now. However, I will still say that it is my observation that MSM has helped this mare. When I have taken her off of it, she has gotten stiff and is off on the effected leg. It is more than coincidence that this mare, after a year of lameness improved so dramatically when taking this supplement.

Got it Diane,
This got activated as I was cleaning up the alternative medicine topic and came across this and decided to put it in the stifle disease section.

I am delighted that your horse is doing so well but there is no action known by which the MSM would effect such a cure. As for the coincidence, it was one of time. And horses get well, occasionally even after this much time, through the normal healing processes.
