A local stable where my friend keeps her horse is having problems with strongyles. Many of the horses boarded there have moderate to high levels of strongyles when fecal floats are performed. The vets involved recommended the five day double dose Panacur treatment. However, follow-up fecal floats found the levels of strongyles still high. Next, the horses were treated with Quest, and the fecal floats had reduced numbers of strongyles. The veterinary clinic involved has found this problem in several local stables. Have you heard of similar apparent resistance to Panacur? Nancy

No I haven't Nancy. What was the actual dose used per horse (how many mg of product), how was it calculated, and how big are the horses? How did they determine the weight. I suspect a problem with dosage, administration, or both. DrO

All of the dosing was done under the direction of the vets involved, so I would assume that the doses were correct. My friend uses a weight tape to determine weight--but she used Quest first without trying the Panacur. The only other affected boarder I know personally has two quarter horses probably both over 15 hands, and I think she uses the weight tape too. Nancy
