I have a seven year-old TB mare who is due to deliver her second foal on April 15th, about three weeks. She slipped on a muddy spot on the hill and fell on some rocks, tearing loose a patch of skin about as large as my palm. The local vet came out, cut off the flap, and said to put on a topical but not to cover it as it would heal better in the open. At the time of her fall she was not lame, though she did appear shaken. I later found several other scratches showing she had hit more rocks on the hillside than I had thought. She is now very lame, but is improved with bute (two tablets crushed and mixed with applesauce and squirted in her mouth) once a day for the past three days. Her temperature is normal, but I gave her a shot of penicillin procaine just in case the open wound was getting infected. Should I continue this? I don't want to harm the baby, but I want to ease her pain.

What do you suggest? I know there is a chance she has hurt deeper structures, or else the wound on the point of her shoulder is just so sore it hurts to move, but I don't know what more I can do at this time. I've started her on MSM and glucosamine to support her healing.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Nancy,
Whether she needs antibiotics or not depends on whether she has an infection that would be responsive to it. We cannot glean this from your post. Best would be to have the veterinarian out to determine this. I also think more work needs to be done to determine the cause of the lameness.
