Our mare went into labor on time Sunday night to only have a foal so big it took the vet and 2 people with chains to pull him out. A very difficult time. The mares had a temp of 103 and they put in a stomach tube in to flush the blood out her system. Vet says she has a stress tear either in her uterous or colon. Fever had been down to 100 today but now tonight it is back up to 102 and she's not eating again. Vet said the fluid does not have bacteria or feces, but now there are white blood cells with the red blood cells which is an indication of infection. Has anyone ever heard of this and will she come out of it? Is there any hope or anyone else that has experienced this?

Hello Vera, Tears in the uterus are one of the more common complications of foaling and it does not always take a dystocia to create one. I have seen mares following a normal delivery of a healthy foal have uterine tears that had to be managed surgically. This is always a serious problem due to the possiblity of peritonitis but the prognosis for your horse depends on many factors that are not availalble to me and it sounds like the diagonsis is still in question. I presume you are talking about the peritoneal fluid and not fluid in the uterus, how high is the WBC count? If a uterine tear is present most likely surgery will be required to correct it and it should be done quickly. DrO
