Hi, had a few questions about both. 1. Does white line disease (sometimes) cause hoof abscesses? 2. Can sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) be used to treat white line disease (&/or a mild hoof abscess?) 3. How long do a treat a hoof abscess thats not causing lameness (what do I look for, etc). 2 of my horses have right now mild hoof abcesses, no lameness. However, my farrier told me to get on this right away (to soak for 3 min with Epsom Salts 2x a day). However, I read Dr O's article on treatment of hoof abcesses, so I am going to soak 20 min with Epsom salts & betadine. But, I was wondering, if also pouring bleach 2-3x a day would also help? Thank you in advance for your replies.

Taking them in order: 1) Not ususally because the infection is confined to the horn. However it provides a great place for thrush to come in and this can work its way down to sensitive tissues resulting in a abscess. 2) It could be used but has only limited efficacy because it is rapidly neutralized. Whether it might result in a cure will depend on how well the diseased tissue is removed, how frequently you apply it, and how clean the environment is. Under absolutely ideal situations it MIGHT work. 3) There is no such thing as a foot abscess that is not painful. So the rest of your post confuses me. Try reading the article on abscesses and if you still are not sure what is going on write back here explaining why you think you do have them. DrO
