Dr O. Please help if you can. My 20 yr. old mare annually gets a practically bald face from a sticky like substance you can scrap off and hair loss in that area. This year the tips of her ears are beginning to show this, as well as back and front of hind legs. When you clean the legs, the hair just falls off. That area doesn't seem as sticky. Is this fungus or exema. Two vets have different opinions. Should slides be taken or which do you think it is? Thanks, Shirley

Hello Shirley, I can't decide from your post whether your mare has unusually greasy skin or if she is getting something on her head like rubbing her head on a tree with sap or even just standing under trees that are releasing lots of pollen. My truck looks this way this time of year. It is normal for horses in the Northern Hemisphere to have horse falling out in large clumps this time of year. But I suspect your mare's condition is a little exacerbated by a touch of Cushings and a touch of dermatophillus. Start with Equine Diseases: Skin Diseases: Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin and see where the links lead you. DrO

Dr. O. Thanks for responding. My mare does not have any trees to get under, and what is on her legs is very dry looking, the hair just comes off in grooming. One vet claims it is a fungus, but won't take a culture. I have another coming out next week to check on her. The stuff on her forehead you can sort of peel off tiny pieces, real strange. Will let you know what the DX is if there is one! Thanks for your input. Shirley
