  Discussion on First HYPP episode
Author Message

Posted on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 10:49 pm:

I have a 16 year old N/H QH Gelding who had his first HYPP episode that I am aware of today. He had been exposed to some paint fumes and I am wondering if that could have possibly triggered the episode? Other than that there were no changes in his environment or diet. Is it possible the paint fumes triggered the attack? Or could this have been a reaction to the fumes and not an HYPP episode? His symptoms included twitching muscles, shallow breathing and a dull look in his eyes. Thanks for any advice.

What type paint (latex vs oil base) was it Christi and how much exposure did he receive?

The fumes did not result in a HYPP episode and taking a blood sample and demonstrating the hyperkalemia during the episode would probably diagnose whether it was a HYPP attack.

It was an oil based stain that was applied to the barn. He wasn't in the barn but in the same 8 acre pasture. The fumes were quite strong though. Did not seem to bother the other horses. I am keeping all of them in another pasture until the smell is gone just in case.

Hopefully this won't happen again but if it does I will have my vet pull a blood sample.
Thank you for your help.
