  Discussion on WLD & Shoes

DrO,
If a good portion of the hoof wall is removed due to WLD leaving nowhere to place nails, how can that hoof be shod? I understand it's best to leave the area open, but are there any times when it might be beneficial to use a filler material to rebuild the wall and nail a shoe to that? The example I'm thinking of is where the hoof wall is removed between the toe and halfway to the heel. Nails can be placed on the opposite side of the toe, but obviously that won't hold a shoe.

I am afraid Jennifer that until the hoof grows out to where you can put on a shoe you are probably stuck with using boots. The problem with filler material is that this frequently gives the organism a second lease on life and it will start up under it. Perhaps if the foot remained free of new areas for 6 weeks (two vet checks), and the owner was adamant about getting started, you can try fillers then watch it like a hawk.
