  Discussion on Drainage with Melanoma
Author Message

Posted on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 1:12 pm:

I have looked over the articles and discussions, but I cannot find ifrmation on drainage from a growth. One of my boarders 17yr TB gelding...gray..has been diagnosed with melanoma for sometime now and she will be starting the drug series, but, we noticed the other day that one of the "lumps" near his anus is draining a black fluid. I have seen a clear drainage before in horses with this, but, this black stuff is new to me and I told her that I would try to find information on it for her. Any help would be apprieciated! Thank You, Amy

Hello Amy,
This is a common manifestation of larger melanomas and probably represents an area of necrosis within the tumor or possibly some exudate formed by the cancer cells themselves. I believe the former is most likely and probably has to do with inadequate blood supply. Some dry up and stop only to repeat it at a later date or some just continually drain the black liquid. Surgical removal is most logical but hopefully the cimetidine will help get this under control.
