Posted on Thursday, Nov 9, 2006 - 12:32 pm: my worst nightmare just came true. she appears to be okay; but i left the gate open to the pool area and my yearling fell in and scraped herself up pretty badly to get out. i saw her in the front pasture dripping wet and almost passed out myself. i just gave her some banamine, (paste) and she is quite upset right now and wouldn't tolerate a shot. there appears to be no fluid in her lungs, though her muscles are very tense and it looks like her legs hurt her.I am not sure what else to do, she's actually eating grass; i think this is helping to calm her. Hopefully the vet will have some advice. the area where she appeared to go in (had the cover still on the pool, which probably caused her to get tangled up more) isn't very deep; maybe 3-4 feet. This is terrible. |

I never would have thought about a foal falling into the pool.If she's eating and is looking o.k., I'd let her calm down for awhile. Do you bring her in at night? That would be a good time to check her lungs. If you don't bring her in, I'd give her a few hours then try and listen to her lungs with a stethescope. Good thing you were home!! |

My suggest would have been to take her temp often and look for change.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.. |

Posted on Thursday, Nov 9, 2006 - 3:32 pm: She is very curious, very brave and very strong. she loves water...She probably just walked right up to the pool cover and fell through.Vet says she is totally fine; just scraped up on her legs, a knot on her chest, some scrapes on her chin and above her eye. Obviously I am now looking at springs to close the gate that leads to the pool. She is normally turned out in a self contained pasture, but I let her and her buddies out to our front and side yards; the pool is enclosed by a fence and a gate, but leaving it open does no good. She is very tired and sore, but I am thankful that she is OK; I am very lucky to not have had it be much more serious. |

Posted on Thursday, Nov 9, 2006 - 8:10 pm: My husband pointed out when he got home that it was the deep end of the pool (around 6') that she fell into...for some reason, I saw the steps on that end and was thinkings it was shallower than that. We hadn't used the pool this year so I guess I forgot. The vet said he's seen a few of these but the horses can get really hurt and he's had some colic afterwards. The filly is fine but tired, I'm still a bit of a wreck. |

The owner saw her horse standing in her backyard eating grass soaking wet. She thought that he must have been sweating from running around "free", but later found out from the neighbor that something had fallen into her pool and ripped the cover apart! The horse was fine... |

As with you, the cover was on and he had apparently walked out onto it thinking it was solid. He is now 5 and still not afraid of anything so take heart! And they say curiousity killed the CAT... |

Posted on Saturday, Nov 11, 2006 - 7:42 pm: A small update...the right side of her face around her eye is swollen, her eye looks completely unaffected and she acts fine, it covers the size of a large softball and sits around her eye. Bless her heart...you know that's got to hurt.I'm hoping that as long as her eye appears to be unaffected (its swollen enough so that her skin goes "past the eye" when you look at her head on, but not so swollen that her eye appears at all compromised. Somebody please tell me if I'm wrong. She acts like this entire thing was no big deal. I'm hoping that this lack of obvious pain is indicative that she really is okay. I haven't seen the elephant commercial, but will see if I can find it. Obviously, I am going to change a lot of things to avoid this in the future. Calling out the fire dept. would have been worse, mostly because they would have had to revive me first... |
