Hi Dr. O,

I'm not sure if this is the right place but it is a single uncomplicated question.

Ok, maybe, more than one question:
Do all horses produce estrogen even geldings? Also,(here's one i should know) what organ produces this hormone and where is it regulated?

Thanks Kim

Hello Kim,
Estrogen is a generic term for any substance, natural or synthetic, that exerts biologic effects characteristic of estrogenic hormones such as 17B-estradiol. They are formed by the ovary, placenta, testes, and possibly the adrenal cortex, as well as by certain plants. Using this definition yes all horses have estrogens because even if they do not form it, they ingest it and just like oral Regumate, it is probably absorbed unchanged. Whether geldings have circulating levels of endogenous (self made) estrogen, I do not know nor can I find any work on the subject.

Hi Dr.O,

The reason I asked was on the rural Heritage site there was some discussion about the use of estrogen injections for locking stifles and then it was mentioned that there is some relationship between female hormones and carbohydrate metabolism. Just wondered if it would help a horse with EPSM?
