Hi Dr. O. I have a 6 week old filly, yesterday I noticed her naval stump is protruding about one inch. I had not noticed this before, but must confess I really haven't been looking. She is still quite skitish, however I was able to touch it...the stump seems to be hard... with softer tissue surrounding it. There isn't any leakage and she didn't seem uncomfortable with me touching the area (at least not due to pain...just an "ooh, now what are you doing" reaction). Is this normal for this age or should I have a vet look at it? (This is our first foal). Thanks for advice, Jacquie **** I just now got a good look at the stump (baby is laying down and didn't mind me looking and touching). With her laying down, the stub is about 1/2 inch in length and the diameter is about 1/2 inch. There doesn't appear to be any swelling, nor is there any leakage (I must have been mistaken about the softer tissue surrounding it, because there isn't any today). It appears to have healed nicely and is hairing up. Will this eventually go away or always protrude? Our other horses have nice flat navals, whereas this one looks like an "outie". Again, Thanks for your advice and time, Jac

Hello Jac, As long as there is not a hernia around the navel this will probably heal up and go away. Signs of problems would be wetness and increase in swelling. DrO
