My two month old colt somehow got pulled through the fence by an older gelding who bit the crap out of him. He had an enormous hematoma on each side of his neck. The vet drained them and now they have a hole the size of a quarter and the skin is ... I'm sure ... dead. This is going to be huge area's...I'd say 8" in circumfrence. I will check with my vet also...but is it better to leave the skin on as protection for a while until the muscle and skin underneath start to grow/heal? I am so sick about this.... I am planning on using vitamin E as I have seen some awfull wounds come out looking pretty good with the use of "E". But again...I'm just sick and need some advice. We made a net protector so that we can try to keep flies away. I hope it is still on him... He is itching something terrible...I guess because the healing has started. Sigh...

The skin is probably a good bandage Collen so as long as it does not have infection under it, leave it on. It can slowly be debrided away as it degeenrates and you might be surprised at what recovers. Let us know how it works out, I had a similar injury where a stallion grabbed me a decade ago that I thought was going to necrose out but didn't, left a whale of a scar however. DrO
