Dr. O & Members:
Have you heard of herpes in horses brought on by the heat? This was just suggested to me and is said to cause itching. Thanks for any advice.
Was also told salt in horses skin when they sweat will cause itching. Interesting.

Well wouldn't THAT be interesting! My boys get the itchies in late June each year, and I haven't for the life of me figured out why. I just apply the Listerine, do the scratching myself, and pray they don't rub too much of their tail out before it's over :(

Shirley,
All horses probably carry the virus and stress may cause recurrence but I have never heard of itching as a symptom. Jordana, Culicoides has many species each which has its own time of hatching and lasts for a month or two, maybe this is the time of emergence of one your horse is most sensitive to.
