Discussion on EIPH and beer | |

Posted on Thursday, Aug 1, 2002 - 4:58 pm: I have recently heard that a horse diagnosed with EIPH---no longer racing---could be made more comfortable, particularly in high humidity, by giving him a beer a day--it would help the healing.Have you ever heard of this Dr O? |

Posted on Saturday, Aug 3, 2002 - 8:36 pm: Well I think that it would really depend on the horse:QH: Beer, definitely, probably 'tap' rather then bottled but never, ever in a glass. TB: Mint Julep if you please. WarmBlood: Why red wine of course, perhaps a nice merlot with just a hint of oak. Unless it's before 4, in that case a nice light fruity wine is in order. Arab: Ouzo, what else? Friesiens: Tequila (don't forget the lemon and salt). Ponies: scotch over ice, don't add water it just dilutes the taste. Irish TB: Rye whiskey and be leavin' the bottle please. Morgan: Spiced rum, it gives me that extra zest you love so much. Sorry, couldn't resist a little humour Teresa |

Posted on Monday, Aug 5, 2002 - 9:38 am: This is when I really need to turn to HA members for advice. I've read the thread and I still don't know what to give my mare. She's a TB born in KY which would indicate mint juleps. But she is in New York so I think I really should be giving her a Martini or even god forbid a Manhattan. But being upstate should it be hard cider, or summer gin and tonics like all the hoomans seem to be doing, or bloody marys for sunday brunch (not mimosas because she's not in Florida -- got that one figured out at least). But would all that changing be bad for diet...? In discussing this dilemma over the weekend was told Ribot, her great grandsire had a pint of plain everyday. And she's lactating; do her foal's preferences enter this calculus? And if I'm showing should my drink match that of my horse's or can it be contrasting? Do the boutique/rare breeds drink microbrews/rare single malts? What about paints, do they drink pousse cafes or other drinks of mixed colors? This is a whole area of concern I had never even considered before. I just thought beer, any beer, would do. Please help! Stumped in Saratoga. |

I hate to disappoint but mine is no better. My Tennessee Walking Horse who lives in Saskatchewan definitely has a taste for beer, Labatt's, out of the bottle. But, he prefers lite, to maintain his trim physique, eh. |

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 7, 2002 - 9:11 pm: I was told they give a bottle of beer to race horses in Ireland every day...maybe its the riders before the race!!! Anyway, from what I remember Guiness was the beer they enjoyed the most...the horses not the riders. |
