Dr O , How quick is the onset of Rabies symptoms. I write to you from Egypt where one of my mares was stumbling and dragging her feet two days ago ,having some sort of convulsions evry now and then that would last for 1 - 2 minutes. Yesterday she went down and her back end is completely paralysed. She continued with the convulsions. She is deffecating and urinating normally but does not eat or drink. We are trying to keep her sitting in an upright position"dog style" to avoid pressure on the lungs. She is getting weaker and while we are administering ringer solution ,anitibiotics ,sulfa..and tubing her and giving her antiinflamatory drugs"IV Dmso" she is not reponding to medication. Someone suggested Rabies amd my question is can it happen so fast. Finally, have you heard of west african fever which someone else suggested.

Hello Omar, From the onset of symptoms to death is usually very quick, from a couple of days up to 2 weeks. What can take a long time is the time from exposure to the time clinical signs develop. This can be many months so frequently the exposure may go unnoticed. Unfortunately both these diseases are possible from the symptoms plus a myriad of others. DrO
