Hi! I may have the opportunity to adopt through a rescue agency a TB gelding, 10 yrs old that is "85% non-sweating". I'm understanding this to mean anhiDrOsis, but haven't had the pleasure of talking with his previous owner's as of yet. He is currently a show jumper in Florida and I live in Wisconsin - the same location of the rescue organiziation. His owner is donating him, primarily due to this condition. I do not plan to do much more than trail riding and basic dressage lessons with him. What should I expect if I adopt him? Is this a life-threatening condition? I do not own a barn, rather a 3 sided run-through shelter. Will he have difficulty on those few hot humid days we have, if he's not ridden? Or does this only affect them when they're exercised heavily on hot/humid days. Thanks! Deb

Hello Debra, Different horses respond differently to the same levels of heat stress so what your horse might do is hard to say. However, moving him that far north before the condition is severe, I am not sure what 85% means, might allow this horse's ability to sweat to improve over time. For more on this condition see the article associated with this forum, it explains the problems and treatment. DrO
