  Discussion on Coon-footed filly?
Author Message

Posted on Saturday, Aug 17, 2002 - 7:01 am:

I recently purchased a filly and have only just noticed that she has quite bad coon feet on her hind legs. It shows up most when she is standing square.

I have a few questions:-
Could it be genetic as she`s only just turned 2?
Is it treatable or will it only get worse?
She could not be a show horse like this as he conformation is wrong, will she be able to take a rider or even breed?

Thanks

Hello Miss A,
Without examing the filly it is hard to say. Coon foot is defined as a horse with pastern angles that are lower than the hoof angle.

Besides being a conformational defect, this could represent a weakening of the suspensory and flexor tendons, or even the result of trimming the foot to upright. If do to improper trimming, it may be correctable. Otherwise treatment consists of making sure hoof angles are correct and easing breakover as much as possible. Prognosis will depend on the cause and severity of the condition.

Hi,
Her feet are in pretty good shape and have been trimmed well and yet still her leg is coon-shaped quite dramatically. She is not on the floor but is pretty much on a a straight line if you can understand what I mean when standing square.

I have just recieved her pedigree today. I have notices alot of odd things, well at least what I would call odd I don`t know what anyone else would think to it.

She is very very inbred. In her breeding she has FULL brother and sister mating together 3 times over. She has Father and daughter mating together. Uncle and niece mating together and a whole load of cousins. All related very closely.

Do you think that could have any effect on her conformation? I`ve never known brother & sister going together.

I`ll try and get a photo if that would help.
