I have been into Peruvian Pasos for about 8 years. Over time the discussion of DSLD has been somewhat hushed so as not to defame the breed, BUT I can tell you what little I have observed and heard. I have seen foals as young as 6 months and horses as old as 20 years of age exhibit signs of DSLD. Discussions with breeders, judges and veterinarians familiar with the breed lead me to a suspicion held by some that the disease may be genetic and is in some way related to an auto-immune disorder. What I have heard, but yet to verify, is that necropsy of connective tissues in some affected horses show anomolies. Those of us that love the breed are hoping a genetic marker is discovered if DSLD is truely genetically inherited. What I do feel is that a disproportionate number of PP's are affected by what appears to be DSLD and I sadly will not be breeding pure stock. I love this Spanish horse for its wonderful heart and hope soon there will be some sort of answer to the dilema.

We recently made the decision to not pursue breeding P Pasos just for this reason Julia. Instead we found a very good looking buckskin Paso Fino stallion to stand and hope to have him ready for the 2008 breeding season. We hope to produce a excellent line of trail horses and have picked for size, sturdy conformation, and a big easy swinging gait, not exactly what is winning at the shows I am afraid. I am currently working (very slowly I am afraid) on an article on DSLD and hope to have it up in the next few weeks. DrO
