Two of my donkeys have crusty skin irritations. I thought the vet said that it was dermatophillus, but he indicated it was a fungus. The "Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin" says dermatophillus is a bacteria. The original cause of the irritations is insects biting their legs. Whatever the skin disease is, the donkeys are healing--partly because we've been having unusually cool weather and, thus, fewer flies and gnats. My vet prescribed Malaseb, which is Miconazole Nitrate and Chlorhexidine Gluconate and is antibacterial as well as antifungal. It seems to be working. Does this sound like ringworm or dermatophillus? Though it probably doesn't matter what it is as long as it goes away, I would be concerned about getting ringworm myself. Nancy

Hello Nancy, Go to the article Equine Diseases: Skin Diseases: Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophillus. It contains clear cut descriptions and illustrations that allow diagnosis from examination alone. Dermatophillus is frequently mislabelled as a fungus, even by veterinarians and older text books. DrO

Thank you. We had a culture done, and I'm sure it's dermatophillus. My vet calls it a fungus. Nancy

I am afraid it is a common mistake. DrO
