Do horses have "food allergies" like people do? I'm not talking about the allergy testing that you are so fond of Dr. O. :-)I mean a specific allergy to a common foodstuff. Sort of like a great many people can't eat peanuts. I read somewhere (God only knows where)about horses sometimes having allergies to bahia. I wonder if that may be a source of distress to my COPD gelding. He seems to breathe better indoors in the summer. I've moved him twice, but the pastures were always bahia (common in FL). Should I try a dry lot or look for a bermuda pasture next? I know barn life is not suitable for him, but really is the only thing providing him relief this summer. I was actually able to get a response to his steroids by keeping him in the barn during the hottest, driest part of the day (just a few hours.) Course, maybe it is the heat. So many variables and so little ability to control them all...........

We believe that some horses do have such allergies but we have not characterized them well. For instance I know of no particular allergy to eating bahia hay. It would be unusual in other species for a food allergy to display predominantly inflammatory respiratory signs more likely the allergin in your case is inhaled. DrO
