Hi DrO
this is hard to describe... my filly has ocd lesion in stifle with synovial effusion. every day I feel the swelling to check it. I can feel gristle in it. could I be feeling the joint mouse? I cant call the vet out that xrayed her because I recently moved. Im wondering if its normal to feel gristle in a swelling. THX

Hello Leslie,
There is no "gristle" in OCD to be felt so am uncertain what you might be feeling. It should not take radiographs for the veterinarian to be able to identify what you are feeling. Be sure to have your older radiographs mailed to your new veterinarian.

Hi DrO,
I have a question about the unusual feeling swelling. My filly is on 2 grams of bute once a day for an unrelated injury. However, the ocd "swelling" is still the same size ( as in -the bute has not effected it) is that normal?
heres some background: my town vet sent the xrays to horse surgeon. The surgeon thought the ocd lesion would resolve by itself. My town vet doesnt think it will because of the swelling. As I posted above, I can feel gristle in there. I almost think its scar tissue and not swelling.
My question is; why is the bute is not bring down the swelling...
Maybe Im just wishfully thinking.
I will be having my new vet check her when spring gets here.
Thanks for your time:-) and DrO sorry to keep bugging you about the same 'ol problem.

Leslie did the veterinarian ever identify what the swelling and gristle are? I still am uncertain what it is you are seeing and feeling and so really cannot respond as to why bute would not bring it down.

DrO the original vet said it was synovial effusion, due to the ocd. he never mentioned the gristle and then later my farrier was the one who pointed it out to me. I have not had to have a vet out since. So I havent had a chance to ask what it could be.
I guess my question should have been: Would bute normally bring down synovial effusion caused by ocd lesion? Thanks again DrO

Got it. No not if the swelling were chronic or long standing. It may temporarily help acute swelling but you expect it to return in time or with discontinuance of the bute.
