Posted on Thursday, Nov 30, 2006 - 2:06 pm: The original thread was getting so long I've started a new one.I just received a phone call from Libby's vet at Alamo Pintada. While keeping Libby under observation and waiting for her pressure sore to heal so he can go ahead with her surgery, he has seen Libby become more and more comfortable with her leg. He currently has her in a shoe with a very raised heel. Although her sore has healed, instead of doing surgery he would now like to try slowly lowering her heel while increasing her hand walking time to see how she responds. His feeling is that she can become comfortable and use her leg without surgery. The theory is that more and more scar tissue will develope and will stabilize the ankle instead of a plate. Her attitude continues to be good; she is eating good, alert, attentive, etc. She is on one gram of bute per day and another med to increase the blood supply to her foundered foot. The foundered foot is doing good and is in a corrective shoe and getting trimmed regularly. The main goal is to have her pasture sound, comfortable, and hopefully able to comfortably carry a foal. Dr. Rick feels at this time he can achieve this goal without the surgery. So...this is great news, as it is my feeling that the less invasively you can treat, the better! If all else fails, there will still be the surgery to fall back on. |

Posted on Thursday, Nov 30, 2006 - 2:29 pm: Great news,,, I wonder if the shoe looks anything like this.. I have been exploring shoeing options for my filly as well.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.. |

Posted on Thursday, Nov 30, 2006 - 9:03 pm: Obviously everyone's good wishes, thoughts and prayers are "going through." Thank you all...and special thanks to Yogi, Kathleen!Holly..hmmm...my husband has commented several times about my animals being a little strange and that they must get it from me; he says the same about my friends. He calls them "not normal." Ann, I've really no idea what the shoe looks like. I'll have to see if I can't get someone to send me a photo of it. I picture in my mind a thick healed shoe, but after seeing your picture, something like that would make more sense. I hope to get down to see Libby within the next few weeks, so if I don't get any pictures before then, I'll bring some back with me that I can post. Ah, that Yogi...he's a smart one. |

Posted on Friday, Dec 1, 2006 - 9:04 am: The shoes purpose is to align the bony column so that the flexors are not engaged supporting the fetlock. It also has the effect of bringing closer together the ends of the torn flexor. Sara what drug are they giving that increases the blood supply to the foot?DrO |
Member: Tuckern |
Posted on Friday, Dec 1, 2006 - 12:44 pm: Hi DrO,I have some questions about those shoes above. What kind of effect does raising the heel that much have on the hoof, and on P3? Wouldn't that just set the foot up to allow P3 to push it's way through the bottom of the foot, or even through the toe or side of the hoof? Also, what happens when the flexors heal and the shoe is removed? Wouldn't it just tear again? Or do they lower the heel slowly, so that the flexor stretches? Just curious to understand the process. Sara, I've been following your posts and am glad to hear such encouraging news about Libby. That's so exciting! I too have been sending positive thoughts your way. Thanks, Nicole |

Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 7:30 am: The effects are not good Nicole as the joints are abnormally stressed and the heel unloaded so likely to become contracted, but given the other problems this is acceptable as long as the horse appears comfortable. As to the prognosis that would best be given by Libby's veterinarian, Sara what is the doctors prognosis at this time for pasture sound?DrO |
Member: Mrose |
Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 1:31 pm: First, I don't know if the shoes that Ann shows above are the same as those on Libby or not. I've not been able to get down to visit and see what she's wearing in person. All I know is she is wearing some kind of shoe that elevates the heel. I also don't know how much her heel is currently elevated, though I assume it is quite a bit. Dr. Rick, while friendly, isn't overly giving with info unless I think to ask, and I often don't think about a question until after the call is finished. I sometimes have written out questions for him, but he usually winds up calling on my cell phone when I'm in the barn or truck busy doing other things with my mind far from Libby at the moment. I obviously need a better system! The prognosis is pasture sound and comfortable with the ability to carry a foal, hopefully. Regardless of what is done to Libby, there is no hope of every riding her again unless some total miracle happens. I'm so happy to still have her around that at this point the hope of riding her doesn't even cross my mind. All I care about is her comfort level and ability to "be a horse." Dr. O, I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the med. used to increase blood flow. It began with an "m" and I know it wasn't Viagra or any of it's relatives. Dr. R. did tell me, but it wasn't high on my "important" list evidently as it went right into my brain and out the other side! I can try and find out by calling the clinic on Monday. |
Member: Dres |
Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 3:04 pm: Sara please post the med info on blood flow... I have been searching the net looking for ideas on how to increase the flow, as that is one of the reasons for such a long rehab to the tendons...Also can't wait to see what kind of wedged shoe she is in... Of course the ones above are ones I found on the WWW... I haven't a clue what kind my filly will be wearing either.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.. |
Member: Mrose |
Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 5:54 pm: I will try and find out Monday about the med. I'm going to have to start taking notes when Libby's vet calls. My brain just doesn't remember things the way it used to.\clipart angry}I have had a horse in the past that wore a shoe with a brace on it similar to the one in the picture...it was to allow a tendon sheath to repair, if I remember right. When the leg cast was taken off, the heel was gradually lowered and the horse mended with no problems. |
Member: Mrose |
Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 5:56 pm: Guess you all figured out the clip art was supposed to be: I'll just blame all typos, etc. on brain freeze today. The wind and cold are terrible. I keep running in for a cup of coffee, then go back out for awhile. |

Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 7:25 pm: Sara,I've had success either faxing or emailing questions to the vet instead of playing telephone tag. They can either return answers via fax/email or when they call at least they know what you want to ask if you're away from the phone. Good Luck, Chris |
Member: Mrose |
Posted on Saturday, Dec 2, 2006 - 11:35 pm: Excellent idea, Chris! I'll give it a try on Monday. I feel a bit dumb not thinking of it myself. I did think of email, but was told he doesn't use it much. |
Member: Twhgait |
Posted on Sunday, Dec 3, 2006 - 10:02 am: That's a great idea Chris!I've always equated my vet visits to being like my own or my kids doctor visits. It's a quick in and out and you hope you remember everything there is you wanted to ask! I've gotten into the habit with my human doctors to write down all my questions when we go in. If your vet is not good with e-mail or faxes, maybe you can just write stuff down ahead of time and be ready for when you get him on the phone? Just don't be like me and forget the piece of paper with all the questions on it! |

Posted on Monday, Dec 4, 2006 - 3:54 pm: I called to see what they were giving Libby for increased blood flow to her foundered foot. I only spoke with a tech and they only thing she could find on Libby's chart was a Platinum Performance product called "Hemoflo" that they have been using.using.https://www.platinumperformance.com/animal/equine/products/productcategories/prod uct.cfm? category_id=16 is the web site for it I found. (I know, I know Dr. O. But it is Southern California, you know. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 6, 2007 - 12:33 pm: Another twist in the sage of Libby.I received a call Thursday from her vet saying he was concerned that she still seemed to be in more pain than she should be at this stage of things. She was doing good over all, the scar tissue is filling in as hoped, but they were still having to give her bute and some days when taking out for her walk she was acting very tender and sore - more so then the vet would expect. So, he wanted to do a scan of leg. Friday Dr. Rick called back and said they had done the scan and it showed inflamation in both sesamoid bones. Both sesamoids are involved, and she has lost up to 1/4 of the bone mass in some areas. The only treatment is to put her on massive antibiotics, and to go in and curatage out all the infected bone, which is then replaced by either bone graft or bone cement. After further discussion, I told him to go ahead with the surgery on the condition that if at any time he felt what he was doing was no longer in her best interest, he was to quit. The aim is still for her to be pasture sound and pain free. If at anytime this prognosis is no longer attainable, then she will have to be put down. She has had numerous x-rays of her foot for the shoeing, but always lower down than the sesamoid area; and all of the scans including the MRI have concentrated higher up.... If only a scan or x-ray had covered this area; but their was seemingly no call for it. One of her initial scans when she was first taken down to Dr. Snow, did show several small round spots that were assumed to be small blood clots. The guess is that one of these clots contained some bacteria which has migrated down her leg (gravity) to the sesamoids. Surgery is scheduled for Monday afternoon. I'll post again when I know more. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 6, 2007 - 12:56 pm: Holly Cow.. I was just thinking of her today and wondering when you were gonna bring her home.. So help me out here Sara.. she has lost up to 1/4 of the bone.. ? Is this becus of infection eating away.. or lack of weight bearing.. ??I so hope she will be able to come thru this phase of the not so fun game.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 6, 2007 - 2:41 pm: Ann, I don't think I was very clear in my last post; she has lost up to 1/4" of bone in some areas of her sesamoid bones due to infection. Her sesamoid area is probably the only area that hasn't been scanned or x-rays recently. It was ultra sounded when she first was taken down to Dr. Snow's clinic. I remember she had hardness and swelling right above her fetlock area at that time. It was thought it was probably due to scar tissue. I remember an ultrasound being done of her fetlocks and entire lower leg, and if a remember right, one or two areas of hardened hemotoma were found, which is one reason Dr. Snow infused her leg with antibiotics. He was concerned about infection. When the MRI was done, it didn't cover this area as it was below the tendon area they were concerned about. However, in both the ultra sounds that were done and the MRI a couple of very small round areas were seen that were presumed to be small blood clots. Dr. Rick said that the most probable way the sesamoids could have become infected was that there were a couple of bacteria in one of these areas and that over time they migrated down to the sesamoid area and infected the bone. Her original wound has long since healed and looks normal except for some expected thickening due to scar tissue. The issues the vets have been dealing with concerned growing enough scar tissue to solidify the ankle and slowly lowering the heel to slowly stretch the scar tissue, and dealing with her foundered foot (which is doing great.) |

I was trying to trim my arab's hooves, something I haven't done for years. She was sooo patient with me, I swear, someone was whispering in her ear! (Not me, I was basically swearing under my breath, lol!) Gotta love those Arabs..and Quarter horses, and Morgans, and.... |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 6, 2007 - 9:35 pm: OH Sarah, you are so patient. But what other choices do you have . . . but to be patient and persistent. At least you have the other areas well on their way to recovery. All we can hope for is to focus on one problem at a time. will be thinking of you and your beautiful mare. |
Member: Mrose |
Posted on Sunday, Jan 7, 2007 - 12:41 am: Shelly, I don't think it's patience; we've gone so far, I just don't see any other choice, so it's more like resignation! She started out with about zip chance of even being pasture sound and has gone up to 40 or 50% chance, so at least that's and improvement in her odds. I don't know why I love this mare so much, there's just something about her...Lonnie feels the same way, and as most of you know, he's totally "un-horsey." Of course, I foaled out her dam and her sire and her, so that helps make her special. She does just "have something" though, every person that has worked with her including her current vets comment on it. Libby, the horsey "it girl." (That's probably going way too far back for most of you, sorry!)Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. I sometimes don't take the time to comment on the different boards, but do know there are a lot of you dealing with your own set of horse health problems and I do think of you all and your horse friends off and on through out the day. As I think I may have said once before, sure wish we all had a magic wand we could wave, or better yet, that our horses were more indestructable. Hard to see that "silver lining" sometimes. |

Member: Mrose |
Posted on Wednesday, Jan 10, 2007 - 11:38 am: There is news and it's very perplexing.Libby had her surgery on Monday, and the surgery and recovery from anesthesia went well. However, when the sesamoids were exposed they did not look "rotten" like one would expect infected bone to look. They were, however, porous with one hole as large as the end of a man's little finger. The bone there was hard. Dr. Rick said he has never seen anything like it. He did remove the weakest section of bone as he was afraid he would shatter and leave shards which could cause problems later on. He also biopsied both sesamoid bones. The results should be back this afternoon or tomorrow a.m. I asked about bone cancer and it could put holes in the bone like this, but vet said bone cancer is extremely rare in horses. So...we wait for the biopsy and hope it will give some information as to what caused these holes. No graft or bone cement was used, btw because not a lot of bone was removed. |

If I don't hear by this afternoon, I'll call down there. I wish she was closer. It's basically a 3 day deal to go down there, or if I time it right and leave really early, then drive half the night on the way home I can do it in two days, but then have just a few hrs. to spend down there. We've another big storm coming in tonight. I dislike leaving home when the weather is so bad - I worry that something won't get done for the animals here and they'll get sick, injured, or??? I'll post as soon as I hear something. |

Posted on Friday, Jan 12, 2007 - 7:19 pm: Biopsy report came back this a.m. and the news once again isn't good. The bone has an active infection even though it is hard and not soft. Her white cell count was way up, but there were no bacterial colonies or fungal colonies. The bacteria could possible be anerobic since they havne't had luck growing bacterial cells in culture medium. She was continuously flushed with saline/antibiotic solution during her surgery, and is now on high doses of antibiotics, Cephazolin and Genomiacin (sp?) 22cc three times a day. She was very wiped out the day after her surgery, but doing better today. Still pretty sore, though. Her foundered foot is doing very good. Her prognosis is guarded. It's hard for antibiotics to reach the sesamoids due to the limited blood supply to that area. It will take a week to ten days to see if the antibiotics are working. If the don't, we could try the hyperbaric chamber. It would be the only thing left to try. Even if the bacteria isn't anerobic, the chamber could help as it increases the Oxygen levels in the blood. Because the anerobic bacteria are almost impossible to grow outside of the body it's very difficult to know if the bacteria are anerobic. Just a couple of molecules of air can affect the anerobic bacteria, evidently. So, we wait until mid-week and see how she does. Hopefully, the antibiotics will work; if not, we'll decide mid-week. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 11:17 am: Sara...my best wishes for you and Libby. If you choose to use the chamber I would be very interested to hear about it as I have only seen chambers used on people and didn't know they made them large enough for live stock. Also I am going to ask the microbiologists at work (I work in the lab as a plebotomist per diem while in grad school) how they isolate anerobes in vet clinics and hospitals as I guess I never thought about it in the animal population, they use culture bottles with humans and the samples can be directly infused into the bottles from the vein via a butterfly and vaccutainer and aren't exposed to oxygen so they are probably easier to isolate. Do they use culture bottles in horses? If not can your vet get his hands on some and see what grows out then?Either way my thoughts and prayers are still with you all. Good Luck. And nose kisses for Libby! |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 6:42 pm: Corrine, good questions. I'm going to call the clinic Monday and ask just how they handle it. I was thinking that the lab tried to grow them from the biopsy; in which case they were exposed to O2. If they could prove the bacteria was anerobic then I'd vote for the chamber. I have a close friend that had a life threatening case of lymes; the hyperbaric chamber was what saved her. She was on hard core antibiotics IV with a constant drip shunt and even that didn't do the job. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 6:47 pm: Thank you all for the good wishes. I feel so bad for Libby; she really is a tough girl. Her vet says she would never have made it this far is she wasn't so smart about taking good care of herself. I get depressed about her sometimes, but try to concentrate on the good news (foundered foot is doing remarkable good) and take the rest one day at a time. It helps to be able to share my worries; and it helps to read other posts and no I'm not alone - there are a lot of us struggling with one issue or another and trying to do what is right for our horses. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 8:34 pm: Sara,My thoughts are with you and Libby. The good news is that foundered foot is doing so well. I hate the irony of her whole endevour. I vote for the chamber, of course i am such a lay person in these matters that my vote is really meaningless, except that i am always willing to try just about anything that offers hope and has a record of results. |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 10:55 pm: Sara, I am sorry, the culture bottles only work for isolating bacteria in blood, I wasn't thinking about wounds as all I have been doing lately is cultures on blood...must have not had enough coffee this am, either way I am still going to ask the microbiologists on Monday when I go into work how they isolate anerobes from wounds if it's at all possible. There might be a way that we are just unaware of. On the bright side if the wound did have anerobes and they were killed off with just simple O2 exposure than yes, the chamber sounds like it might be key in treating the infection. Also, as in many cases of illness, there always seem to be steps forward then back, so try to keep the faith. We are happy to hear the foundered foot continues to do well! And when you get a little sad remember we are all here and praying for you and Libby! |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 11:01 pm: P.S. As to the second line in my last post....I should have said I wasn't thinking about isolating anerobes from wounds or bones (as in Libby's case) but I will do some research when I get to the micro lab Monday. Gosh can't blame coffee now for my bad communication skills....maybe I need to go to bed. LOL |

Posted on Saturday, Jan 13, 2007 - 11:50 pm: Corinne, I'd be grateful for any info you can get. I was going to spend some time on line this weekend to see if I can find any info. Of course, Dr. Rick and the others at the clinic are pretty on top of things, but...makes me feel useful and I learn something. If I get a little incoherent I can blame it on brain freeze instead of lack of coffee. 22 below right now, a new record, and the night is still young. Yikes! I may sleep in front of the fire tonight. |

Posted on Sunday, Jan 14, 2007 - 1:10 pm: Sara,You poor thing, rabbit punched with all your equine efforts, and now you are in the deep freeze. I cannot even wrap my brain around those temp #s. That is just 6 different kinds of wrong.. I am pleased for your sake that you have her at AP. Walt has used them on & off for many years and I have heard nothing but good things about them. State of the art. You seem to be one of the strongest and most levelheaded people I have encountered in a long time. God bless and keep both you & your dear Libby. |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 25, 2007 - 4:03 pm: Another update: Once again Libby seems to be pulling through. She seems to be responding to the antibiotics. Her dr. has spoken with one of the big clinics in KY. Dr. there said he's seen one other case where the bone appeared like Libby's. The horse did respond to antibiotics, but the response was slow. The horse did heal, however. So, this is a little encouraging.I've asked that Libby go ahead and start getting the chamber treatments. Even if the bacteria aren't anaerobic, it should help speed the healing process. She was to have had her first treatment yesterday. I should know by middle of next week how she is responding to this latest treatment. I am praying it works. Her attitude is still good; she is still eating good, interested in what's going on around her, etc. and looks good. All that is in her favor. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers. Poor girl. I miss her. It's amazing that with 12 horses around, I'd still miss her so much. |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 25, 2007 - 4:26 pm: Sara, in the most recent issue of Arabian Horse World (you no doubt have already read) there is an article and photos of an arab mare recovered from a devastating hoof problem there might be ideas not thought of for Libby. It is just the old bookseller in me, all information has the potential of being the KEY! Libby and Barbaro must have some hidden power they are drawing from both are amazing survivors! Prayers Always Cindy |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 25, 2007 - 5:12 pm: Cindy, I haven't seen the article, I'm going to look for it. Thanks.Nicole, I hope it's a positive update; it's sort of an "iffy" positive. She's a strong mare and strong willed...maybe that is what she and Barbaro both have in common...that strong will. I hope it's enough to see them both through their troubles. |

Posted on Friday, Jan 26, 2007 - 4:15 am: Still sending wishes for healing. Can't wait to here about the chamber treatments...still can't picture a chamber big enough to fit a horse! I am sure too, regardless if it's anaerobic, that it might speed the healing.Spoke to the microbiologists and they said, if a syringe is used to aspirate the biopsy from which they are trying to isolate the organism it is rather easy to determine aerobic vs anarobic (sp) sorry it's early. Good luck. Speaking of the lab guys...off to work to fill in for someone. Got to love leaving for work at 0330! LOL. Take care. Prayers and hugs. Corinne |

Posted on Friday, Jan 26, 2007 - 12:11 pm: Thanks, Shirley.Libs and I have a lot in common; maybe that's why I'm so attached to her. We can both be pretty stubborn, and don't ever back either one of us into a corner unless you want a big fight! I think it's that fight that's keeping us both going. I just hope the treatments work. One side of me is scientific and thinking this will be interesting to see what if any difference is made; the other side of me feels desperatly that it has to help as the chamber and the antibiotics are her last chance. Corinne, there is no site to asperate bacteria from. There is no bacteria in the blood, only in the bone. When small samples of bone were cultured, nothing grew; but the clinic doesn't have an anaerobic culture chamber and had to send the samples out to a lab. I'm sure there was no way to do so without some exposure to O2, unfortunately. |
Member: corinne |
Posted on Saturday, Jan 27, 2007 - 11:13 am: Yes Sara I remember it being from bone and I would have thought that the instruments used to a punch a sample would have kept it isolated from oxygen but I just don't know what they use on horses. I too asked how they could keep it free from oxygen when transferring samples to culture dishes and they said it isn't killed that quickly but I still wondered even with that explanation. I think the microbiologist got annoyed at me when I kept inquiring (like the lay person just knows these things) and since I work there I just DrOpped the subject as I really have limited knowledge. LOLEither way the chamber, from my limited knowledge still speeds recovery although I am not sure about the exact mechanism. please keep us updated about how that goes. Continued prayers. |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 3, 2007 - 12:52 pm: Oh, it's a great day today!! I'm so happy! Dr. Rick called and his news was very encouraging. He said he isn't sure if it was the hyperbaric treatments, or if she would have improved anyway, but she HAS improved!! She is up almost all the time now, there is no more swelling, her kidneys are doing fine and haven't been affected by the antibiotics, and although her bone hasn't started to fill in, it hasn't gotten any worse. He seemed really encouraged. He said if she'd been any other horse she wouldn't have made it this far. She is very smart about taking very good care of herself, and is a very easy patient. They didn't even have to sedate her for the hyperbaric chamber treatments. I was so worried about her after the sad news regarding Barbaros; it just didn't seem to bode well for her hearing he had to be euthanized. But, although I still must remember to take one day at a time, for the first time I really feel like she IS going to make it!! Once her bone heals, she still may have to have her ankle fused, but that is down the road if it needs to be done at all. So....thank you all for all your good thoughts, wishes and prayers, and thank your horse friends for theirs, too. And, thank God. I just feel we're going to make it! Dr. O. you need clip art of little people jumping up and down and cheering for this!! |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 3, 2007 - 5:25 pm: It will still be awhile before she can come home. And, as someone pointed out to me, what makes me think she even wants to come home? She's living in a huge stall with a view of neighboring vineyards, great room service, good food, daily spa treatments (swims in therapy pool) and warm sunshine. Maybe I'll just load up the camper and move down there! When the vets tell me she's healed up enough to come home, I'll host the party. I'll bring home some great wine (champaign?) from one of the neighboring vineyards. You'll just have to fly out to UT to join me! |

Posted on Friday, Mar 2, 2007 - 6:30 pm: GOOD NEWS!!! Libby's vet called and she is really doing good! They now have her off all antibiotics and back on her exercise program to strengthen her bone. X-rays and tests show no more deterioration of the bone and no signs of infection or inflamation. She is standing up almost all the time, like a normal horse. He thinks SHE CAN COME HOME by middle of next month or earlier. We just have to wait for her bones to strengthen more. They will continue to follow her progress and are hoping that she may even have some filling in of the bone. She has never gone off her feed and never shown any adverse reaction to all the meds she was on. She's one tough girl!Dr. Rick had his staff wash her today and let her nibble grass. He said she looked so good, he just had to get some pictures of her. He's going to email a couple to me, and when I get them I'll try and post one. I'm so happy it's scarey. I hope nothing goes wrong at this point. I so want her home! She's cost us a fortune, but if she's pasture sound and breedable, it will be worth it; let alone worth it from the emotional point of view. Keep at it Libby, I think you've won the battle!! |

It is so dreary and yucky being swamped in by the blizzard, It was wonderful to have some GRRRRREEEEAAAAAATTTTT News to hear. Toes, fingers, and hoofs crossed for you and Libby to keep up the fight.Actually, because I am so bored, Levi is working on a new trick, crossing his hooves. This singing cowboy taught his horse to cross his legs, when he asked him if he had to pee. Levi has it 1/2 learned already. Sleep Well tonight suz |

Posted on Friday, Mar 2, 2007 - 10:08 pm: I'll think about the wine. It will have to be a California wine, preferably from Santa Ynez area. Substitutes allowed, of course. If Levi has half learned his trick, which half has he learned? The need to pee, or the crossing his legs? |
Member: quatro |
Posted on Friday, Mar 2, 2007 - 10:25 pm: Sara, you are too funny. He has the need to pee down pat, waits till he comes in to his nice clean stall. The crossing his legs he has down pretty good, just need to tighten it up. Will post when he gets the trick down pat.Would not that be the greatest, maybe we could get on to the Worlds record for the most people participating in a spontaneous cyber toast to Libby. Posted on Saturday, Mar 3, 2007 - 12:17 am: Absolutely "floating on air" news, Sara.I am working full-time until April 15 (yep, doing taxes) and have had a very difficult time trying to keep up with all the HA e-mails the past few weeks. Today, there were 181 epmails in my box, and I am afraid that I have to delete many of them, but not this one ;-). I had been wondering where you were (didn't realize you went to Scottsdale) and just this morning, I made a mental note to write to you to ask about Libby since I hadn't heard anything for awhile. Amazing that you should write today about her progress. We will definitely join in a celebratory toast to the skill of the doctors, the dedication of you and Lonnie, and the mercy of God who is the Author of all healing and enables us, by his grace, to live each moment. Mark is partial to California Chardonnay . . . so I think that's what we'll have in our goblets when the time comes. So good to hear, Sara. Can't wait to see some photos. |

Posted on Saturday, Mar 3, 2007 - 10:23 am: Lee, hang on and keep a good attitude. The vet said the reason Libby is still alive and doing good is her attitude. Feeling down now and then is normal, but don't let yourself feel that way for very long. Remember, God works miricles. Remember Libby. She is a horse that 3 different vets told me to euthanize, but something in her eyes told me she wanted to live, she wasn't going to give up. Being "down and out" is rough, especially for horse poeple, I think, because we are used to being active. I hated it when I was sick. Hang in there and we can raise a toast to you and Libby both!Corrine, take care of that flu. There are several cases of pnumonia here that started out as flu. Two elderly and one 24 yr. died last week from it. Now that you're good and scared, go to bed and get your rest and go to the dr. if it doesn't go away in 2 wks. |

Posted on Monday, Mar 5, 2007 - 1:08 am: Holly, never thought about a story; have just thought of getting her better somehow. My fear is that after all of this something could still go wrong. But, she is much better and much further along than she ever has been since her accident. Seeing her pictures with her looking so good, just brought me to tears of joy! I'm dying to touch her and be close to her.If the story of her recovery were to be written, it should be by one of her vets, probably Dr. Rick. I really think the hyperberic treatments were what made the difference. I'm so lucky his clinic has a chamber for horses. Actually, it was pretty amazing, as the equine treatments are less than human treatments. I wish every vet clinic could have the facilities and equipment clinics like Alamo Pintada have. How many animals could be saved? And, I wish that clinic wasn't so far away. A lot of credit goes to Libby herself. She is a fighter with a very stubborn streak. She takes after her dad, I think. He's the same way. She's also very intelligent and not only has an innate ability to take care of herself but knows what she has to do to help you take care of her. |

Posted on Monday, Mar 5, 2007 - 12:02 pm: She is out of our mare Sahira Rose and by our stallion MR Asmar (aka "Mikey") For those interested in such things, Sahira is *Talal/*Morafic breeding, and Asmar is a Dal Noir (Dalul son)colt out of the mare DB Isismoniet. Isis is from Dr. Godward's breeding program.Talking of her pedigree reminds me of a story that partially explains Libby's fortitude: At the beginning of the Egyptian Revolution, the king and queen knew they were going to have to leave the country to save their lives. They had many beautiful horses and worried about what would become of them. They chose a dozen of their favorites and shipped them to Dr. Godward in California. The king had become friends with the dr. several years before when the dr. did surgery on either the queen or queen mother, I've forgotten which. The horses had to travel to Europe, then to New York, then by train to California. Their trip from Egypt to California included a boat sinking, being rescued and put on another boat, then the train they were on was hit by an avalanche in the Sierra Mountains, several cars including the one the horses were in was tipped over and wasn't dug out for five days. All the horses survived and eventually made it to the doctors in relatively good shape. Their story sounds like Walter Farley's story of the Black Stallion, but it happened several years before Farley wrote his books. The grand dam of my gray stallion (Waseem), and the grand sire of my black stallion (Asmar) were a part of that group of horses. (Waseem's grand dam was pg with his mother during that time.) |

She is beautiful and not sure who said it above my My Arab Gelding would be sad too... I do hope she is breedable (is that a word?) Her linage makes her so valubable - not to mention I would keep her as a Yard Toy too if need be. Just because of her personality (sticking to it) and her beauty! So if ya ever want to get rid of her LET ME KNOW! She can be a Yard Ornament here anytime!!!Many Many Happy thoughts and Congrqats to you, the DRs and Libby.... |

So many of the little ones struggle with incredible trauma. If you show them what Libby has done it would give them that much more hope and encouragement and Libby could be their Dream mare.Reguardless you and Libby have given us all renewed strength to go the extra distance for the horses we love, VERY WELL DONE Cindy |

Posted on Monday, Mar 5, 2007 - 8:32 pm: Sara,Don't know how I managed to miss your post.... suddenly besieged by emails hailing the good news, had to go find it and the pix. Stunning horse and story. I think both Cindy and Holly are right!! Libby may need a publicist, or at least a literary agent before the summer! Schedule a homecoming parade and email the local news channels and don't forget to tell them about all the surrogate aunts & uncles Libby has had pulling for her ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!Lots of yellow ribbons along the route home.... I know you are justifiably proud of her lineage, but I can't help thinking that a lot of her intestinal fortitude came from her 2 legged mama! Heartfelt congratulations to you both. You set the bar right up there! Hugs and Hoisting! |

Posted on Monday, Mar 5, 2007 - 11:54 pm: Thanks Cyndy. I'll certainly keep everyone posted. I'm trying to decide on the wine. If you were all closer we could have a big barn party in her honor! It's kind of neat thinking about people from all over doing something at the same time, though.Shelly, she is a sweet, lovey kind of girl. She like being scratched under her chin and between her front legs; her ears, too, if you do it just right. Thank you ALL for all the warm wishes, prayer, kind thoughts, etc. I know others have said this, but I can't tell you how good it is to have support when you have a horse in crisis. When you feel depleted and question yourself, are tired and teary, it's really nice to have such a great group of understanding horse owners "out there." Now, let's just get this girl home!! |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 7, 2007 - 9:51 am: Sara,I am SO HAPPY for you. What determination and good care can do is remarkable..Holly and Cindy are absolutely correct. You could call it "LIBBY'S STORY, the NEVER NEVER GIVE UP STORY" (or some such title)and market it in the self-help, kids and equine markets. Good photo's and vet for the equine and fun pictures included for the kids and self-help. Her story could help so many...I can see the book in all the children's wards, together with a stuffed toy of Libby. The book and toy sold as a package together....kids in hospitals love to hold stuffed toys, it soothes them. They are also very concrete and magical in their thinking, so would give the toy all sorts of powers that translates into their own hope and courage. Just an idea....see she has even inspired me. She is so very beautiful, and more than that noble in heritage, heart and appearance. |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 7, 2007 - 4:51 pm: Hmmm...I may have to give it some thought. Actually, I would love to write. I have another true horse story I've been wanting to write for years. It's about a stallion that belonged to a friend of mine. There was a big fire and when the owners could finally get back into their place they had lost everything. Then, in the middle of a charred pasture, the fences burned, stood a small band of mares and foals with the stallion circling around them keeping the huddled together. The stallion had also allowed a two yr. old colt into the huddle. All the horses in the show and breeding barns were lost. only these survived. It's a wonderful story. I lost a horse, and was down there the day afte the fire and helped move some of the mares with their foals. I knew the stallion, who was beautiful! I have always felt he was a hero, even if he was acting on instinct, and that his story should be told.So..I guess I have two books to write. Muffi, I have a son who's a professional graphic artist, and a soon-to-be daughter in law who's also an artist. I'd have to give them first refusal! |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 7, 2007 - 7:40 pm: Sara been was in the book business for years was bk. buyer for small independant store that held its own even when B&N came to town.If you go the book direction it would stand a great chance. Even on this web site under inspirational there are several great stories. Maybe a book of such stories would be a very could concept and believe me the artist is a HUGE part of the success! Cindy |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 7, 2007 - 11:37 pm: I have a lot of stories inside me, Cindy. I used to make up stories for the boys when they were little; and the animals I've had have given me a lot of stories. They there's the stories my Dad used to tell about how the Lobsters got to Maine (from Texas, no less) and an ongoing series of stories about a coyote named LuLu. I keep thinking someday my life will slow down and I'll have time to write them all. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 11:48 am: I was just on the phone with my graphic artist son and he's telling me the same thing. He also suggested approaching hospitals like our Intermountain group in Utah about their publishing it "in house" for the children's wards. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 1:15 pm: Sara, I'm so thrilled for you and Libby but I am knocking on wood as I am reading the book discussion. Too much superstition in me due to my ER work. Humor me guys and give that beautiful mare a few more weeks to improve before the publishers come for the photo shootI've found Libby to be a strong and favored name for my mare. She is Libberty, born on Memorial Day, and she is the reason I joined this site. I think of your Libby every day, can't wait for the Internet toast!! Best Wishes, Stacy |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 1:36 pm: Sounds like we have some "chicken soup for the HA lovers souls" going on here.Or; "Libby's Courage"....for kids. I think in depth stories for the adults, illustrated little books for the kids. Maybe HA members could submit illustrations and stories. In fact, my daughter comes up with some neat cartoon like horses from time to time...and profits could go to a childrens hospital and/or animal rescue! This is fantastic to dream about....can it become a reality??? Of course, Sara, it's your horse, you can just sit back and collect the royalities yourself too. |
Member: mrose |
Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 2:16 pm: Stacy, trust me...I have the same "knock on wood" mentality! We're talking "down the road." If I wrote something it would take me at least a year to do so I figure. And, I don't know where I'd find the time at the moment. I just cancelled on a show at the end of the month due to lack of time.My Libby is Liberty's Rose and she was born on the 4th of July. Lee, I hope you're doing o.k. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I know from experience, as do several other members on HA, just how miserable the whole sick/surgery/hospital/recovery thing is!! Hang in there. Angie...lots of dreaming at this point; although the fact that Justin (son) doesn't think it's a crazy idea is a push in the writing direction. |
Member: mrose |
Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 2:19 pm: btw, Angie, I like "Libby's Courage" and I think donating at least some of the proceeds to a horse rescue or vet group is a great idea. Maybe money that was received could go towards buying some advanced equipment for a local clinic so horse "in the sticks" could get better treatment. It would take some thought. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 8, 2007 - 3:28 pm: Hey SaraHow about "The Little Horse with the Big Heart" or "The Little Horse that Could" (hope that is not plagarism from "The Little Engine that Could!") Even tho Libby is not really that little, being an Arab, I think you could use the euphanism to relate to "little kids" who are very sick like Libby! I think your son is right to "push" you toward this book. AND, be sure to let us all know ahead of time so that we will be ready to toast her homecoming over the internet! FUN! Nancy |
Member: ajudson1 |
Posted on Friday, Mar 9, 2007 - 7:22 am: "Libby's Courage"...her beautiful head on the cover, The Stars and Stripes in the backround. Sara in there somewheres...I can see the cover of the book!! (HA, we'd have a picture of Sara finally)"The Little Horse That Could, and DID"....beat the odds. Libby is more kid friendly version, near the top of a hill, like the little engine is pictured on the train tracks. I think the photo shoot should be done as soon as Libby comes home. And keep taking pictures "just in case". One of my biggest regrets is always "Why didn't I take more pictures?" After I loose a beloved pet! I even noticed we don't have hardly any pictures of my husband because he is the one taking the pictures and that is going to change around here. I agree with Nancy, you and your son should do this now, while it's fresh in your minds along with the emotion in your heart. Doesn't have to be the finale copy or published in any time frame, just get the rough draft down! (((hugs))) |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 10, 2007 - 10:22 am: Here's the latest on Libby from her vet.Dear Sara: LIBBY is going for longer and longer walks and hence is getting stronger and stronger on her front limbs. The farrier worked on her last week and she was very cooperative which meant she will willing to bear full weight on each limb...again a good sign. I am very encouraged by her progress. Thank you for sending the check last week. Depending on your schedule we could start to talk about a discharge date....I don't want to hurry things but we could start to make some early plans. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 12:30 am: WE'RE HOME! LIBBY IS HOME!!!!!DrOve into the drive at 10p.m. She did fine although the trip was long. We left Alamo Pintada at 10:30 a.m. Utah time; 9:30a.m. Calif. time. We stopped every three hrs. or so for about 15 mins. and going was generally slow due to half the country being under construction. She was so happy to be home I could hardly keep her to a walk going to her stall. We stopped to say "hello" to all her friends on the way. She is now munching hay happily in lots of clean shavings and in a new blanket. So...here's a toast to Libby!! She made it!!! I'm so tired the room is moving, like when you've been on a boat for a long time. Too tired to eat. A glass of wine and bed. I'll post details tomorrow. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 7:36 am: Sara,There is a collective sigh of relief all over HA today. Surely after all you have both been through the past 6 months, an epic case of exhaustion is not going to interfere now!!! We are all greatly relieved for you, but mindful that you have a huge task still in front of you.... not her continued rehab.... that will be your pleasure and privilege, I figure.... The book, Sara... the book. You have a classic tale of survivorship and perseverance to tell and there are many ears and hearts who need to hear it. You have been empowered to give the gift of hope and encouragement. OK, first things first...we raise our glasses to you and Libby tonight.... Then fire up the word perfect...lol. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 8:29 am: Mark whispered, "Chardonnay . . . California Chardonnay.," and it didn't even make me dizzy.Forget the hotel and spa . . . Libby's prancing to her stall shows that there's no better place to be than with Mom and friends . . . "there's no place like home." With you in spirit from Heaven and Kansas . . . continued blessings! |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 12:03 pm: O.K. for those of you who haven't toasted yet, or who want to toast again, I think an international group toast would be fun. So. lets all try for 7pm MST, which would be 9pm East Coast. I tried to think of a time that would work for Europe as well, but they are 8 hrs. ahead in France anyway which makes it really late for us here in the US. Sorry, Jos. I think Austraila is 16 hrs. ahead of MST which would make it a late a.m. toast. Is that right?Libby is eating away this a.m. I took off her standing wraps and her legs are tight; she's pooped, rolled, drank water, etc. and seems happily settled in. As soon as the morning chill wears off I'll go out and get some pictures of her. THANK YOU ALL for all your good wishes and support. There were times when I felt discouraged but all your support, prayers, and good thought really helped. I don't think Libby's long struggle, surgeries, etc. would have been the right course for every horse; but in her instance I had a strong feeling it was the right thing to do. I would have quit at any time had I seen the special light in her eyes grow dim. It never did; she never wanted to quit. Her vet told me that after her surgery when she wasn't responding to the antibiotics, his assistants though he should call me and tell me she needed to be put down, but he had the same feeling about her that I did. He said she always took such good care of herself; never stressed her leg; was always cooperative; never lost weight or started to "look poor;" always seemed to be trying and never looked like she wanted to give up. He sent instructions and a letter home with me. I nhis letter he said that Libby had been a very great teacher to all of them at the clinic; that through her they learned a lot. He is looking forward to seeing a picture of her with her foal at her side. There will be lots of handwalking, gradually building up to limited turnout, etc. We will also do follow up x-rays to make sure the density of the bone is improving as it should with weight bearing exercise. Eventually, she should be pasture sound. I hope to bread her a year from now. |

Posted on Friday, Apr 27, 2007 - 7:49 am: Sara, In France you can drink wine during all hours of the day. In Normandy, where horses are more important then anything else you can drink during the night too.My maths are horrible but I suppose in between 3 and 5 o'clock this night I should drink[all the time to be sure I make it!]Hope to meet her and you in person to repeat the toast together in september! Enjoy being together once again and with the deepest respect for both of you, Jos |
