Hi Dr.O. When the old farrier was trimming my horses I noticed these "slits" in their hooves. They were on fronts and backs of all my horses. I have always wondered what causes them. Since I have gotten the new farrier, they seem to have disappeared. Just curious, if it is caused by poor trimming or enviroment. Thanks

Diane, are you talking about the cracks at the heels that run somewhat parallel to the rings that can be seen in the foot?

Yes Dr.O. In the top pic they are at the bottom of the heel area and not quite so bad. In the bottom pic this horses hoof looked like it was ready to seperate and fall off. This horse in the 2nd pic has never foundered. Is it caused by under run heels?

Yes I think the run under heels creates an abducting force on the wall causing the wall to crack and separate. I would love to post images of the way the feet look now for comparison.

O.K. Dr.O. here are some pics from today, it is muddy out but you can see the slits are gone. The horse in the 1st set of pics is finally starting to come sound on his back hooves. The new farrier has only done these horses the last 3 trimmings and he said it would take awhile to get the hoof back to better form.
