When I went to feed my horses this morning I noticed blood coming out of the left nostril of my gelding. I wiped the blood away and looked up his nostril and could not see any abrasions. There was only a slight trickle. He is on pasture 24/7 and does not get ridden a lot. He ate his grain and nibbled on hay like normal. Should I be worried? I read the article on nose bleeds and I would say he was in the mild hemorrhage range. Any help would be appreciated. Cheryl Smith

Hi Cheryl, If the bleeding is not stopping I would definitely have your vet take a look at him. I had a horse a few years ago that started bleeding from the nose. It did not quit. It turned out to be a hematoma. It was removed and I was lucky in that it never came back. It did cause scar tissue which obstructed his breathing too much for racing but he was perfectly fine for trail riding or buggy rides. Good luck!

Cheryl, there is not much more I can say about assessing this than is expressed under the subtopic When is a Nose Bleed Serious? in the article on Nose Bleeds and there is nothing in your post to indicate that the information provided there does not apply. DrO
