I can recognize when knees, ankles, hocks have edema for some reason I am not so good at recognizing stifle joint swelling. I have asked my vet to show she several times but it just doesn't ever sink in. Part of the reason is that I have seen so many different horse's stifles look different (from unworked horses to sound horses in work) and I don't have a positive control to compare too... This is probably impossible but does anyone have a picture of a swollen stifle joint? I have seen joints that look like this (terrible diagram but all I can think to do to describe it so sorry if it is confusing): Would this be considered swelling? I am asking because I want to be able to recognize stifle swelling especially in young horses. Thanks for any help.

Welcome becky, I don't have a program that readily opens Word docs and my operating system ignores my request to open .doc in the programs I do have when they are placed in HTML documents. Could this be uploaded as a gif or jpeg file that would not then require downloading? DrO

Hello DrO, I am not sure how to go about doing that but basically it was a VERY simplified diagram that I tried to draw. Here is the link to another picture that I found showing what I sometimes see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/41186811@N00/329263618/ and am not sure if it would exemplify stifle joint swelling or not. Thanks for your thoughts. Hope you can see the picture, I couldn't post it here or it would be way too small. Thanks, Becky

DrO, I don't know which Google update does this, but I am now set up so that if I click on an embedded Word document (e.g. doc1.doc above) it appears as a Google Doc. No MSWord, etc. needed. If this is of interest (and you can't figure it out yourself) let me know and I'll investigate it. Knowing OS and browser would be helpful. Regards, Wiley

Yes that linked to image represents swelling of the femoropatellar joint capsule, one of the three joint capsules of the stifle. For more on this see Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Disease of the Stifle » Overview of Stifle Lameness. Swelling in this region is often due to trauma, often a kick. DrO
