Hi Dr. O, I have a question about my 9 yo gelding's recent splint. It occurred on the right front, lateral, and I suspect he got it when he knocked his leg on the practice dressage arena during turnout. The heights match, and the arena is made of thick landscape timbers. He was diagnosed by my vet on November 5th, and I treated it with cold and compression as described in your article. He has been decreasingly lame on it until ten days ago when he became sound on all surfaces. It is cool and non-tender. I did not have it x-rayed at any point.
I am now wondering how long to watch him be pasture sound until starting back work? He was working 4-5 days a week at Second Level dressage when it happened. I intend to start him back with just walk and trot, long slow field work for his musculature, but when to begin anything? Thanks, Stacy Upshaw

Stacy, I went and looked at the article and decided this could be a bit clearer so have updated it, see if it answers your question now.

Thank you very much, now I have a well-defined timetable to work from. I am certainly willing to invest the time up front so the splint does not become a chronic intermittent problem. Happy New Year to you and your family! Stacy
