A friend of mine has a 4 yr old Rocky Mountain mare. At the most recent fall vet check, he made a note on her invoice that her mare had colobama. When she called to followup on what that meant, he told her it was not serious and something very common in horses of this mare's breed. I checked for this word in the reference dictionary and found there are many types of colobama, depending on which part of the eye is affected. I could not find any discussions about it. Dr. O, can you enlighten me? My friend is an orthopedic nurse and very interested in getting more info than her vet had the time/desire to share.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Fran,
As you have read a coloboma is a adjective meaning a congenital defect of a tissue usually represented by parts missing. It could be applied to any tissue.

Colobomas of the lens (would appear as a cataract) and most commonly retina (a hole so the choroid or sclera show through) are reported in horses Fran so we will have to go back to the vet who made the observation. Since your friend should be able to see an iris defect with the naked eye, it sounds like a retinal defect.

However I have to wonder if this is not anterior segment dysgenesis, which IS a common problem in Rocky's and I am not certain could be termed a coloboma though there are similarities as they are both congenital defects. For a very complete discussion on this see Anterior Segment Dysgenesis (ASD) in horses in the list of discussions in this forum.

Dr. O,

Thank you for your quick reply to my post. She contacted her vet again and, you were right. He confirmed that he was using coloboma as a general term and the mare truly has ASD. Her vet then gave a more complete explanation and referred her to some websites to visit for more info. I only saw her in passing today at the barn, so I will quiz her as to whether HA was one he mentioned to her. If not, I will definitely do so as I find it a great resource.
Thanks again.
