Just recently have noticed a flea infestation on my dogs. And hence, now found a few tapes in the dogs manure. Are the tapeworms a different variety than what a horse can ingest vs. a dogs tape? I guess what i'm asking, is it species specific? The article mentions mites for the horse, while i know ingesting a flea is the culprit for the dog. Does a horse have to ingest the mite to get tapes? and Can horses also by mistake ingest a flea and still get tapes? I've never seen a flea on my horses or goats? why is that? Anyone know?

When we lived in WA State we had a horrible flea problem - I sprayed the nematodes around the house - garden and barn area. The next year there were 0 fleas on any of the dogs or cats. There were still no fleas 5 years later when we moved and I only sprayed the nematodes that one time. Not an answer to your question - but is a way to get rid of the problem. CK

Horses are not known to contract the common species of tapeworms, like that contracted through fleas, that dogs and cats get nor vice versa. DrO

Looking up tapeworms and there are so many of the species... just wondered if there was some kind of cross contamination. its all a tad confusing having so many different kinds of animals and which problems cross over to each specific animal and which don't... grin... I still am curious though why i've never seen a flea or tick on my horse or goats, when i know my land is infested with them. I can wash the dogs clean and within a day they are filled with DrOppings again. Its just awful.

cheryl, do you have a link where to get the nematodes? And do you know if they will get eaten by my chickens? I did hear that guinea hens would help in my problem they'll pick clean an area of ticks (not a problem luckily) so curious if they do with fleas too... cheap and natural if i got them....

Jojo - I know Farnam has them - you might check with your feed store - That's where I got the ones I sprayed. We had chickens and ducks when I sprayed - didn't seem to matter. The first year I sprayed I went ahead using Advantage - which helped - the second year I kept waiting for fleas to show up - not one. We got Tobe the second year. He had horrible skin allergies which the Vet insisted were caused by fleas. She spent a good 15 minutes looking for signs of fleas on him and couldn't find any. Blood tests revealed he was allergic to just about everything but fleas. He's 9 years old now and to my knowledge has never had a flea on him. It has to be above freezing to spray the nematodes. I forgot to mention - our property - 4.5 acres was surrounded by a 5 foot fence. The dogs NEVER got out and to my knowledge the cats stayed in too. Cheryl
