I just got the results of x-rays on my horse's stifles and got told that she had a 'flattening on the frontal chondryle (sp)?. Also that this was suggestive of cartilage damage or meniscial (sp?) damage, but that he wouldn't be able to tell for sure w/o scoping her.

We decided to try more conservative treatment first, however.

Unfortunately - I am not sure what the 'flattening' means? He said that it wasn't OCD....but it doesn't sound like DJD either?

Kimberly, you need to ask him what he considers the possible explanations for the abnormality he sees on the radiograph. If he does not believe this to be OCD or DJD, is he suggesting this is a inherited conformational defect leading to instability of the joint? Perhaps radiographing the other stifle might clear this question up?

He did radiograph both stifles, and said that this flat spot was where they were different.

Could this be damage from an old injury?

He didn't say it wasn't DJD - just that it wasn't OCD. Can DJD manifest as a spot that looks like bone isn't there as opposed to too much bone like you see in hocks?

He said something about 'possible meniscial or cartilage damage'...

We have had a chronic issue every time we try to start solid canter work....so I'm worried about whether this is something that has a bad outlook or not.

The horse isn't all that young - she's almost 10, but was a pasture ornament till she was 7 and then only worked sporadically. She's only been in regular work for about a year.

I am afraid without seeing these lesions(?) Kimberly I just don't know. Yes you can have osteolysis with DJD but it should be irregular in appearance. However OCD lesions can appear fairly smooth, but he says they are not likely. My advice is if the vet feels these are significant to send them to a veterinary orthopod or radiologist for evaluation.

I should be getting a CD with the x-rays on it (they were digital)....

How would I go about sending them to somebody(or finding somebody to send them to...)?

My barn mgr saw the x-rays and said it looks like a spot was sanded down flat.....

You can post them here if you would like us to see what you are talking about. They will probably require editing for more on this see, News & Help ยป Uploading Images and Files Into a Posting. If we can't figure it out you can have your vet call the veterinary school closest to you for a radiographic referral and consult.
