Hi All, Yesterday when I went to bring the horses in, my 9 month old was playing and jumping around like a crazy man, bugging all the other horses. When I called, they all came running including him. All of a sudden, he started to take very lame steps. When he came to me, I noticed he was standing up on his toe of his front hoof. I picked up his foot, and noticed a small stick stuck in his hoof, in the indent between the frog and the sole. It was a small stick, and I was able to pull it out by hand, however, it went in about 1/4" I would say, and there was a bit of blood on the end of the stick. I believe it just happened while he was running up to the barn and I got it out immediately. I brought him in and soaked his foot in epson salts and warm water, then put a poultice on it of iodine and sugar, and wrapped it. I soaked it again this morning and put on a poultice again and wrapped it. He has shown no signs of lameness, or heat, and he appears to be 100% but I am concerned with infection. Because of the spot of puncture, I can't even see the hole or injury. He has had a recent tetanus booster, but I was wondering if I should put him on antibiotics. I have a call into the vet, and she will hopefully be out tonight, but thought I would run it by all of you as well. Shawna

Hi Shawna, 1/4 in. isn't real deep. I Have had this happen a few times. Sounds like you did all the right things. I personally wouldn't think antibiotics are needed as long as you put iodine or betadine on it. If you got all the debris out I bet he'll be just fine, otherwise you could be looking at a future abscess I would think. Leave it to babies

If the wound drains well, I agree with Diane, and you have done very well. It may help to get the hoof knife out and open the wound by paring away a little sole around the wound as the frog has a habit or sealing back up around a wound. You know you have pared enough when you see bleeding. See the article on foot abscesses for recommended daily therapy. DrO
