Aloha everyone, My mare is now 4 years old, will be 5 in April. I noticed swelling in a straight line in the center of her abdomon, beginning at the rear and running forward, and pouches in front of her tits area on both sides. It concerns me. I mentioned it to my Vet, he said, "yes, we have seen that but don't know what it is," I think that possibly it could be an infection? Is there some way to check for infection? Has anyone seen this in their mares? It comes and recedes some and then comes again. She has not come into season for some time due to the time of year so it can't be associated with that. This has been going on for years now. Sure would appreciate some imput on this. Thank you Sidnie

Because it comes and goes it sounds like fluid retention. does it come and go with exercise? In older mares that have had several foals their teats, and sometimes the area in front of their teats, remain a little full looking. I've seen heavy (fat) mares with swelling in this area, too, which I assume is fat.

A friend of mine has the same problem with her mare. She has never been pregnant. She would not let anyone touch her back there without trying to kick. So she had some blood tests done and found out she had a hormone imbalance. She also found out she was anemic, and was told to put her on Red Cell. The Vet also put her on SMZ for 10 days and bute for the discomfort. But the Vet could not tell her how to keep it from happening again. Her mare gets it quite often.

Hello Sidnie, Sorry for the slow response, I somehow lost track of your post last week. We have an article that explains ventral midline swellings see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses for more. Assuming the problem has not passed I would be interested in your assessment of your swelling using the article as a guideline. DrO

Sidnie, I had a TB mare with this type of swelling that behaved exactly as you described. The vet also had no idea what it was but considered it harmless as there was no pain or fever. Also the swelling was hard, not soft or squishy. I went ahead and bred her. She caught the first time and had a lovely colt for me. She did have low milk production but she was a maiden, so that may have been more of an issue than the swelling. I no longer have this mare so can't use the article to examine her. But I am in touch with her owner and will inquire what the swelling looks like now. She is due to deliver her second foal next month, so we will see how the milk production is this time around. I first bought her in 2003 and she had the swelling the entire time I owned her (until mid-2006). Suzanne
