hi,

my cousin who leases my horse has a problem with her mare. she had the vet come out yesterday as her mare is lame on the left front leg the vet said its the digital/check ligament that goes up the back of the front leg(sorry not big on technical terms)!

her mare needs 1 month full rest and then 5 months of light work only. can anyone please shed some light on what kind of injury may have caused this and what is the best way to help rehabilitate her mare?

thanks!

Hi Kathleen,

while you wait for DrO's reply, you could click on "Muscle and Tendon Diseases" above, and then "Rehabilitating Tendons". You'll find a very comprehensive rehab program for tendons and ligaments.

Good luck!

There is a more specific article at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Inferior Check Ligament Desmitis. Inferior check ligaments are a bit different than other ligament and tendon injuries in that very little visible pathology can still have remarkable lameness and so the rehab protocol does not always match the ultrasound findings. However the rehab schedule is still pretty good just bump the severity up one or two notches over the actual ultrasound findings.
