I have a filly (currently just turning 2) who had colic about a year ago. She ended up having surgery and they found a lot of manure built up in her intestine. It was just there - not dried or compacted. There was not any foreign object stuck - no good reason for the colic. My vet was stumped as she has done hundreds of surgeries and never had one like this. Well, here is my question. The colic happened with the change of seasons. It was when the warmer spring air started to arrive. It has gotten me concerned that the same thing could happen this year. Is it possible that the change of seasons could trigger a colic? If so is there anything I could do to make this less likely. I have been regularly feeding her a cillium product since last years colic. Thanks, EllaB

When you say regular how often? I think that it is a good idea to feed this every month for 7 days. That is for sand which we know they all get. And make sure she is drinking enough water. Happy Trails

Ella, my vet once implied that they see more colics with changes in weather fronts, seasons, etc. I inquired here and DrO set me straight... colics tend to increase because of a change in management due to the changes in season or weather. So, from that, I take it to mean that the more you keep things consistent and the same, the less likely the horse will colic (this assumes there is no underlying health issue that would contribute to the colic, such as a sand impaction).

Hi Ella, I could almost set a clock in the spring by Hanks colic. Last year he didn't after I changed his management. It seemed it was shortly after the grass would start growing it would happen. I locked him up with hay and water. I think his problem was he picking so short to the ground he was eating quite a bit of dirt with the grass. He is a hog and would rather pick at grass poking thru than coming up for a drink. I also give him metamucil that time of the year now. Last year with that management change he was FINE!

Thanks for the feedback, I have been feeding a cillium product (per vets orders) at 1/2 dose daily during the time of year when there is not green grass and then having her on the 1 dose per day for 7 days a month during the grass season. So far so good but I am worried about spring. She was boarded out last spring so she would have other babies to play with so I was not able to see her patterns. I will be keeping a close eye on her this spring. Thanks all, Ella
