Hello here is the story: I am moving my horse to a barn where there is a pregnant mare. The owner of the stable also owns the pregnant mare, and requires all new boarders to have their horse vaccinated with pneumabort K for protection against EHV1. My mare has her rhino vaccination, and my vet says that the pneumabort K vaccine would not do the pregnant mare or my mare any good, because my horse is not pregnant. I tried to tell the stable owner this, but her vet strongly advises her to have the incoming horses vaccinated with pneumabort K(!?!). So my question: Is is necessary for my mare to have the pneumabort K vaccine to save the stable owner's mare from an aborted fetus? And shouldn't my mares vaccine for rhino be enough? I am very confused, (sorry for the long story). Thanks, Lisa

Vaccination 21 days before moving to the property may be associated with decreased shedding of the EHV-1 virus, so it is not an unreasonable request. On the other hand all the vaccination in the world is not 100% protective and I personally think there are more effective products.

Lisa, it is her farm, her mare, and her veterinarians request, so if a brief discussion does not convince her that this is not necessary in your case, you have to decide how badly you want to go to this farm. Consider this: the mare may have trouble no matter what you do, you don't want to be the one who is not following the rules. But before you do this be sure you have a written copy of all the rules and requirements, it sounds to me like there may be future head butts over management coming.
