A friend has a 4-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding who was recently diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma on his third eyelid. The vet removed the entire third eyelid yesterday and will send it to the pathologist. Obviously, after the pathology comes back, they will know more, but what is the likelihood that the horse will have a reoccurance? Does he need any further treatment, beyond removing the lesion? He is a bay horse with lots of white, but not really a pinto. The affected third eyelid was white but the eye is brown.

Hello Linda, The answer to your questions depends on the extent of the lesion: how far down the third eyelid it had traveled. The farther down the 3rd eyelid the more likely there will be reoccurence. So this is best answered by the person who removed it. The article explains more about the malignant characteristics and other possible treatments. DrO
