I have a 6 month old colt who is hypp n/h. I have talked to my vets and have received conflicting statements from them. One said I could have him gelded and should put him on the pills 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after gelding him. The other said I would have complications with the anesthesia no matter what. Does anyone know anything about this or has had a hypp n/h or h/h horse gelded?

Hello Lori,
Many HYPP horses are castrated without complication but there is no doubt that there is a risk of complications. I tried to find an incidence but no one has looked at large numbers to give a accurate prognosis. We have castrated several and not seen any problems.

Hi!
I have raised an n/h colt named Ricky. He is amazingly loving and has become a huge member of my family. He is almost like a dog... Impressive Grandsire and Colonel Freckles Grandsire. He has had two episodes one stronger than the other but alarming enough to call the vet out on a Sunday night . I feed Country Acres 12% pellet (one scoop am and 1 scoop pm). He weighs approx 900 lb and is 2 yrs old - born Feb. 11th. He seems to be a bit overweight - builds muscle lijke no other horse and I don't even work him much- ;longe line 3 times per week 20 minutes , trail riding once per week. Ricky won a Grand Champion prize in halter in his age class and then went on to win Grand Champion against other horses 3 and over. He is awesome, and I am concerned that I am not feeding him what is recommended. Please advise me of a good diet appropriate for a horse of this description- preferably one that is rather affordable. Supplements? Meds? Thanks so much!
