I have had my filly a couple of months now but ever since I have had her she seems to hyperventilate. Can horses do this?
If you`ve got hold of her and she feels stressed or she is lead away from her friends or is left on her own she breaths very noisly faster and faster as if hyperventilating.

Is this normal. She does it with no excersise at all. Even when I come to put a halter on her and she wants to come out of the stable or field she does this.

It gets louder and louder and faster the more she panics I should say.

It would be nice to know whether it is normal then I need not worry about it.

Thanks

She is not hyperventilating she is getting excited and yes, horses can do this and as to whether this is normal might depend on lots of things but I certaily do not want a horse tht panics everytime I put a halter on it.

It does seem peculiar as she does seem to do it when excited but if thats the case she gets excitied at the slightest thing. Like when she knows she is going to go out in the field again from her stable and you are about to put her halter on she starts it then and breaths more and more frantically.

It takes her a bit to calm back down again. She had grown up more or less wild before I had her but still I`ve never known any youngster react like she does.

Puzzling?

If you wanted to check to see if there was a physical cause that exacerbates when she is excited you could have her scoped for more on conditions that obstruct the airway see the article associated with this forum.
