Hi everyone, My 13 year old mare in very good shape is losing hair like in the spring. It's mid-September. I was riding in Wyoming for about four weeks and have been home in Arizona about two weeks. It was about 40 degrees at night and low seventies during the day in Wyoming and shorter days. Is it possible that she started putting on a winter coat and is now shedding it? I've had this mare for nine years. She normally puts on a heavy winter coat and then sheds like crazy starting in March. The hair she is shedding now is very short. I just wormed her but this started before that. She seems fine otherwise.

It is more likely she is loosing her summer coat and has not yet grown her winter coat, it probably will begin shortly. DrO

Thank you very much. It's just that I've owned her a long time and she's never done this before and none of the other three are shedding. She seems fine otherwise so I won't worry. Just curious. Pam

A puzzler. I just brought two horses from Colorado to Hawaii. Now 4 weeks later both seem to be fine and healthy except that one is losing his hair in small and large areas over most of his flanks, neck, chest, and barrel. It does seem to itch slightly, but not excessively. The hair is falling out individually, with no scabs, bumps, or underlying skin irritation observable. The skin seems very smooth and healthy. This started in one area and within two weeks it broke out in areas all over his body. The areas that appear unaffected by the excessive hair loss are losing a lot of hair, like regular shedding. Could all of this be a reaction to the weather change? Should I be bathing his whole body in Nolvason....or should I just relax!? The first area where it became comepletely bald is now growing hair back and looks much better. Any general treatment suggestions? I read the dermatophillus descriptions but those do not seem to apply at all. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Considering the skin looks healthy it sounds like a change in location is responsible but it is not so much the weather that causes this as the change in the amount of daylight. DrO
