My three year old has a puncture would just below his left eye. It is about 1/4" in diameter and 1/8 to 1/4" deep, I cleaned it out with warm soapy water and used a guaze pad and appled a triple antibiotic to the gauze and set in over the would. I tried to cover the would but I cannot find a tape that will stick to the hair, so I just put a fly mask over his face to keep flies out. I don't believe it needs stitches but, it there anything more I can do? or has anyone come across a tape that will stick to hair. I tried a cloth tape and duct tape. I feel that it should be covered with a gauze pad. Also is there something else that I should be putting on the puncture would. I cannot use a spray because it's to close to the eye. Dr. O what do you think? Thanks Sandy Mendez

Sandy, though your first aid sounds very good unless you are very sure there is nothing in the wound, that it is draining well, and there is no reason to suspect a aggresive bacteria may be present we recommend you get professional assistance with wounds.

The wound will need ongoing care, we cover that in long term wound care but the location close to the eye prevents you from flushing it will a hose. Cleaning it daily with a betadine-in-water (mix to the color of dark tea) saturated clean cloth then applying your antibacterial should do it if the wound is shallow and uncomplicated.
