Snake bite occurred on left rear pastern 10/19/02, sometime in the afternoon; we did not see it occur. Morning of 10/20/02, left rear leg was swollen approx 2x normal. Farrier was present; we carefully searched leg for wound, could not find any; presumed stress from running previous day. Started on 2g bute/day; wrapped leg from hock to coronal band with vetwrap for 24 hours. 10/21/02, began linament massage to entire leg; swelling was reduced but still significant. 10/22/02, serum leakage on lateral fetlock; shaved leg; still no evidence of wound. 10/22/02, more serum leakage. 10/23/02, veterinarian came out; now evidence of beginning necrosis around leg. Cleaned with iodine; wrapped with gauze; started on 33cc penicillin daily. Bandage has been changed daily; no evidence of pus or gangrene. Wounds are healing cleanly. Lower leg swelling is gone; upper leg mildly swollen from hock up. Lymph node is baseball size and hard. Sheath is slightly swollen. Beginning 10/27/02, pm, showing evidence of lameness in leg. Morning of 10/28/02, able to walk, but with difficulty. Calling vet back out; wondering about more advice. Thanks.

Hello Phil, This can be treated like any deep wound at this time, with an extra emphasis on antibiotic coverage due to the necrosis, see » Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds: First Aid, Care, and Proud Flesh. There you will find extensive information on treating this horse. Though you are past the acute leg swelling problems we do address this issue at, » Equine Diseases » Lameness » Swollen, Painful, Legs. Lastly we have discussed snake bites before and have several interesting discussions on them. Should give you plenty to think about but let me know if there are any questions. DrO
