What is happening at my farm???? I have one yearling pop a splint on the inside cannon a few weeks ago and just noticed a 2 year old with the same thing. The two horses are related by sire. They are on 70%grass/30%alfalfa hay. They are given very small portions of strategy x (without alfalfa, 14.2% protein) maybe 3 cups a day in the AM.The yearling only has turn out, no work. The two year old is lightly ground worked. They are turned out with other yearling fillies and an old nanny mare about 5 days a week all day. The arena is large, sandy on one side and hard clay on the other where the sand washed away. Is it the hard ground? Could it be possible they both were kicked? Can it be a gentic fault? I have never seen anything like this and don't understand what is happening. Please let me know if you have a clue because I sure don't.

Hello Brendna, Using the condition scale found at » Care for Horses » Disease Prevention and Health Care » Weight, Condition, and Eventual Height Estimation what would you say the two ranks as. DrO

I would rate them at 5-moderate. The yearling is an Azteca and the 2 year old is a Adalusian. I am very careful of weight/overfeeding due to growth issuses in young horses. The Azteca has small hooves in porportion to her body but the Andalusian has nice sized hooves. There is a push on conformation horses to be big and fat at a young age. I don't belive in doing that to a young horse.
