Hello, I was reading the very informative article on fibrotic myopathy on this site and saw the included scientific article about denervation atrophy associated with fibrotic myopathy. I have heard this mentioned before in other places, but never in great detail. My question is, is the denervation atrophy a CAUSE of fibrotic myopathy, or a possible RESULT of already having a fibrotic myopathy? They mention the horses with denervation had to be put down; what is denervation atrophy, and why would it necessitate euthanasia of the animal? I don't quite understand what the nerves have to do with the scarring of muscles. Thanks!

The damage to the nerves would be a result of the injury that caused the fibrosis and is not a consistent sign of fibrotic myopathy. But the decision for euthanasia would depend on evaluating a particular case and not one aspect like this.
