Posted on Tuesday, Feb 13, 2007 - 6:42 am: I am remodeling part of the barn this spring. I am thinking of doing an overly large stall in some way to make it an area to house and work on injured or ill horses. Our area vets travel quite a ways to get here and I think a warm large area to work in during the colder months might be a great idea.Towards that end, I'd like ideas on what to consider putting in. I thought of water, drain system, heat lights. But then thought there might be supplies in addition to the regular first aid kit that I might keep on hand. Ideas anyone??? |

Also I recommend fluorescents run along the two opposing side walls where they meet the ceiling to create a shadowless well lit stall.DrO |

I have so many other smaller animals that the vet has come out to do "surgery" on and the best i could do was create a clean area in the garage. You don't really need supplies that the vet would have. but a closet that stays tight and dust free for towels and supps would be nice too. will the stall be used ONLY for this purpose? or multi purposes? |

This stall would be used for washing horses when needed, prefer doing this outside, and to contain an animal that might need to be isolated for treatment. The area I am looking at is 14 x 20 feet. I am trying to come up with a way that it could house an animal that needs isolation, but that the vet could work on horses during the winter for shots, floating, etc. Even taking one in to do hoofs in the winter would be nice. This is in the first stages of development and I am trying to think of circumstances when it could or would be used. I don't see minor surgery being done, but perhaps A.I. in the future. |

We use them for preg. checks as well as vet visits and for bathing. Couldn't do without them.In the center of our barn we have a grooming area which has side lights, as Dr. O. suggested. My husband, the electrician thought of them and they are wonderful. In cold weather the farrier works there instead of out in the cold, vet does teeth there, you can see when treating wounds, when clipping, etc. Although I have water nearby, I don't have a sink and would highly suggest you get one if you have the room and water is available. Hot and cold running water would be wonderful! A small work counter is great to have. A couple of cheap, long over the counter medicine cabinets would hold meds. I have an old dresser stuck under a wooden shelf which holds wraps, bandages, etc. and keeps them clean. |
