Posted on Tuesday, Feb 13, 2007 - 10:48 am: Hello everyone. Had my first almost episode of colic last night but it was less scary than I thought it would be because of HA. We were in a lesson standing in line waiting to go over a set of bounce fences (in a class that was rather large) and my horse kept bringing his back feet up and stomping them. He was a bit sweaty but we had worked hard for the last 40 minutes. I got off to assess him and I brought him to his stall so he could urinate. While someone was walking him after I ran to the manager’s computer and looked up the colic first aid tree. Got a stethoscope and thermometer and my watch and ran back to get his vitals. No tachycardia, tachypnea, grunting. All his vital signs were normal. His bowel sounds were normal. He was not looking at his flanks. Walked him some more for good measure. Held his feed (his appetite was normal so he was mad). Waited for him to stool (2 nice normal consistency stools) and then stayed with him for another hour or two just to be sure as I watched him happily eat his dinner. He was fine! He apparently was just having an attitude about being in lesson during dinner and had to urinate, which he won't do with me on his back. Thank you for the valuable information. I knew the vet would have wanted me to take measures before calling him and thanks to the first aide tree I did not have too. HA was a God Send. When I walked out of the office with all this information I penned (didn't have time to print) everyone thought I had a telephone consult with the vet...who we never had to utilize. Thank you Dr. O. Once again, this site is the best money I spend each month. Take care, Corinne |

And next time just in case the computer is locked and the barn owner away I have printed all the emergent care articles and have them in a three ring binder in my medical bag. |
